I'm also pretty sure that people trading off our rights in exchange for the promises of government to protect us and not abuse the leeway they're given is giving in to fear. The power they're being given is nothing they'll willingly give up ever. Looking the other way or making excuses when the government gets busted surveiling peaceful activist groups or police departments revive their "Red Squads" is giving in to fear. Ignoring the fact that before 9/11, the biggest terrorist body count in this country belonged to a disgruntled white guy and pretending that after 9/11 somehow all of our domestic terrorist outfits that have a proven track record of murder going back decades have somehow vanished is giving in to fear. None of it is the survival-promoting fear either, the fight-or-flight fear, it's the dangerous kind of fear that makes ordinarily decent or at least harmless people do terrible things.
