I figure this thread is steering towards a flame war between all the branches or anti-war figures so i'll try and steer it back:
Good for you trackstarr for considering joining the military. If your like me, you don't have any idea what to do after high school and you certainly don't have the grades, money, or desire to go directly to college. I joined the Navy to see the world and get the College Fund and GI Bill (its working wonders right now.) I don't regret a single moment I spent while I was in.
Here are a few tips:
BE WARNED: Your recruiter is NOT your friend. Think of them as car salesmen. You can't stand 'em, but you still have to deal with them. Ask about all the enlistment bonuses and college funds you can. Don't pick what they want you to do. Look over each job CAREFULLY and THOROUGHLY. On paper, the military can make a janitor look like a waste management technician. Its all in the wording so be careful. Choose your rate, choose your fate.
Also, joining the DEP (Delayed Entry Program) will decrease your time spent in the inactive reserves (if you decide to get out.) You can also gain rank before your even sworn in by meeting certain criteria.
If you do decide to join, be prepared to do some paperwork. The military is a finely tune machine of bureaucracy so bring a pen wherever you go. The motto "Hurry up and wait." applies heavily in the paperwork department. You'll spend a whole day or two down at your states MEPS depot filling out the initial paperwork. Then when you get to boot, you'll spend anywhere from a couple of days to 2 weeks filling out more.
Hope this info helps.

Forgot to mention that. And remember, it's more important to them than sleep, so you're going to be starting off jet-lagged and a day or two in sleep-debt. If you can learn to sleep on your feet, do it.millhous wrote:

You'll get your first full-nights sleep when you get to your designation school.
Shit, I spent almost 16 hours at MEPS in one day. I hate that place.millhous wrote:

lol, i heard this joke somewhere, forgot where. Might've been another forum.
And....don't flame the messenger (me). Or kick me into a bottomless pit. That would be madness!
lol....why oh why do all the services hate on each other.A Marine was walking wearing his full marine uniform, hat and everything, when he saw a little kid, the little kid asked "Wow are you a marine?" The marine replied "Yes i am, would you like to wear my hat?" the kid put the hat on and walked around all happy pretending to be a marine.
A Navy man, all scruffy, dirty and probably drunk walked upto the kid and said "hey kid, wanna suck my dick?" and the kid replied "No thanks, i'm not really a marine"

Yeah it definitely takes balls to join during wartime, or even during peacetime in days like these. I would've loved being in the military in the 80s. You still get the honor and distinction of having served, but there wasn't anything uber-major in most of the 80s if I'm not mistaken.
Anyways I would think it safer to be in armor than be infantry? I don't know, but being in a 70 ton war-machine sounds a whole lot safer than running around on your feet or in tin-can-mobiles.
I've always entertained the thought of joining one of the branches if I end up doing badly in school, but I've never given it serious thought. Mainly because I'm not fit at all right now. If I was fit though, and knew more about my future, then I'd give it more thought.
If you choose to join the military though, then best of luck man.

Doesn't the marines have everything though. If BF2 has taught me one thing, is that they have:
M1A2
LAV-25
AH-1Z
Hummers
So, if you're joining them. Doesn't mean you'll be sleeping in dirt fucking Chyna. Or...whatever.

Lawl no, the Army gets all the fancy-schmancy stuff and the Marines get the fancy or the scmancy stuff, but never the fancy-schmancy stuff.Mekstizzle wrote:

From what I hear, they do get the nails-for-breakfast eating, gunpowder shitting grunts
Haha, try being in the Dutch army reserves. Sometimes we don't even get ammo.Hurricane wrote:

Our reserves get lots of ammo, because most of them don't know how to aim.
As somebody else said, get all the info you can before you do anything. Try and find a govt. website about the service you would consider - for example, here in Australia the website www.defencejobs.gov.au is about the ADF and is run by our government. It has all the info on all the jobs... you can even start the application online. Does the USA have an equivalent?

i dunno, most jobs higher up on the government in the US are held by former military men.
Huh? IIRC blackwater are contractors. The DefJobs website is run by the Australian govt for recruitment of people into the Australian Defence Forces... where'd you get blackwater from?stryyker wrote:

ehh w/e do what you want but remember you have to live with it. i suggest the marines. just my little opinion though.
The military IS necessary. . .
Teaches boys to be men, and all the while protecting the USA. The US military is the single most important organization in the world PERIOD!
The USMC in particular is the "Tip of the Spear" as far as conventional forces are concerned. When the USMC is after you, your in trouble. . . .major league trouble! The combo of superb infantry, air power, and armored capabilities is unrivaled. . . .

I don't see how a government website would be a grand fountain of info for this stuff. They want people to join; of course they'll make it sound lucrative.mcminty wrote:
