There has been a lot of idiotic talk about Russia no longer being a superpower lately. The fact of the matter is that it very much is - for the simple reason that it could annihilate any country on earth with its nuclear arsenal. That, to me, shows that Russia is indeed a superpower (mineral/fuel wealth aside). What think you?
Poll
Could Russia annihilate any nation with its nuclear arsenal?
Of course, silly question | 85% | 85% - 49 | ||||
No | 14% | 14% - 8 | ||||
Total: 57 |
The key word is "Could". Yes, they "Could". Would it happen, most likely not.
Not to be confused with hyperpower.

Yes, but the US would in turn obliterate them, so we all lose, didn't you see that one movie where the kid challenges a government supercomputer to a game of "global thermonuclear war" (+1 for whoever finds the title), and the computer concludes that it is impossible to win the game?
Does it all still work?

This is a stupid poll.
Duh, of course.
They can on World In Conflict, so they can in the real world
(even though WiC is based on the Cold War)

It can.*

The United States failure in its 'War on Terror' has effectively ended its hyperpower status. A hyperpower should be able to go it alone, unilaterally, and we've seen that in an era without large scale conventional war, that no longer works. Combine this with resurgent Russian rhetoric and a China that grows stronger literally day by day and 'hyperpower' status no longer applies.
Kmarion = Superpower

Could Russia annihilate any nation with its nuclear arsenal?
No, 10 interceptor missiles in Chechnya effectively stops them.

Russia's Topol-M SS-27 missiles...
Another source...
What use is an anti-ICBM network if Russia can beat it?

But you are making a good point, one that I have been trying to illustrate for some time. At least over a year.

What was the excuse the Russians had for developing more elusive missiles in April 06?
The shield is not designed to protect against the Russians but rather smaller states who are just now acquiring technology to use such missiles.

Of course, silly question.
I heard that if we used every nuke owned by America we could destroy the world 14 times.
The Russians had the US beat big time during the cold war. In numbers at least. I believe they also developed the largest.lavadisk wrote:
