CIA jails in E Europe 'confirmed'

A Council of Europe investigator says he has evidence to prove the CIA ran secret jails in Poland and Romania to interrogate "war on terror" suspects.  Dick Marty, a Swiss senator, has been investigating CIA operations on behalf of the European human rights body.

In his new report, released on Friday, Mr Marty says secret CIA prisons "did exist in Europe from 2003 to 2005, in particular in Poland and Romania".

Mr Marty says he drew on multiple sources and used his own intelligence methods to investigate the CIA's "extraordinary renditions", the process under which terror suspects were transported around the world for interrogation.

"The secret detention facilities in Europe were run directly and exclusively by the CIA. To our knowledge, the local staff had no meaningful contact with the prisoners and performed purely logistical duties," the report continues.

But it adds: "the highest state authorities were aware of the CIA's illegal activities on their territories".

Some detainees were held in secret for several years and subjected to "degrading treatment and so-called 'enhanced interrogation techniques' (essentially a euphemism for a kind of torture)," Mr Marty says.

In comments published in the French daily Le Figaro on Friday, Mr Marty said "suspected terrorists" were also "kidnapped then tortured and detained illegally in rogue states like Syria, where there is no civilian law or law governing the rules of war".

God bless America. Isn't it great that they are the good guys?

Sheeple will just say this is a necessary part of fighting terrorism. I assert that if this is the case the US has already lost the war on terror for it has sacrificed it's ideals and morals and in doing so has become the enemy.

We already know that the US don't abide by the Geneva convention. Their refusal to categorise many prisoners as POWs is another aspect of it, their torturing of suspects at secret (and not so secret) camps, is also well known.

This sort of behaviour (and a lot more besides) really pulls them off the moral high ground.

The war on Terror was never about 'morality' or 'ideals'. It's about property. Every war is.

I know it's not about morality or ideals but the Bush administration tries to pretend it is and continually push that angle.

Meh.  I'd love for all you guys to show me your outrage about what happens to our guys when they are taken prisoner...  So quick to jump up in protest of the US and *shudder* Bush.  You all are scared of/angry at the wrong people.  Moral high ground?  I'd say anything short of chopping off heads and the US still holds the high ground.  How about those of you where your government allows the US to have these "secret" prisons?  Where is your enabling morality?  If you don't want these "secret" prisons then why does your governments allow us to put them on your land?  So the US has no morals, but your can be bought?

Surprise, surprise...another post to jump on the anti-American bandwagon. I'm sure every person we detain is a choir boy. Like i have said in other posts here. When will you people address the REAL injustices going on all over the world that are much worse and more severe than America detaining prisoners or possible/actual terrorists. I bet you anything that in many cases, the info these operations gain have stopped some pretty bad things from happening.

I'll say it again....NO COUNTRY is innocent from doing wrong or has a perfect, spotless record. NO COUNTRY can say they are not holding innocent people in their prisons whether it is secret or not. NO COUNTRY can say that they do not have covert/ black operations going on even as we speak. It all, of course, focuses on America in the end. I truly believe our morals are above or equal to most countries around the world. That is my belief and my right to believe that. I could list injustice after injustice that exist in this world that no one here is posting or being critical about...that is a true double standard. I love my country and what it stands for and would never want to live anywhere else. Its funny that we are such an "evil" place but no where in the world does any country have such a HUGE immigration problem as America does. I wonder why so many risk there lives to get here...maybe because of immoral, corrupt governments they are fleeing or maybe a better life that America does offer(if you come here legally) I don't see a mass exodus happening from America, we must be doing some things right. Maybe not everything...but most. Okay, waiting for the next "you bad Americans" post.

I think the Geneva Convention has allways been wishful thinking. Certainly the enemy has never used it. And now we can't be bothered either. Sort of make sense.

It's as much a scathing criticism of Europe as it is one of the US... frankly I'm ashamed. I thought we were better than that. We should strive to make sure this never happens again.

Exactly Poe, negatives are negatives no matter who commits that negative. I have been reading posts here long before I registered and it always amazed me at how America is portrayed and neglecting to see that there are world wide problems committed by almost every government/ leader. America does not have a monopoly on what is going wrong in the world. I'm not saying the U.S. is pure and acts properly all the time and of course there is a lot of focus on America right now and deservedly so, but there are things going on in this world that are outrageous and so far below morals that just get overlooked over and over. There are governments and elements pretending to be leaders in this world that are so corrupt and troublesome that people have become ignorant or sanitized to what is going on. People seem to put on blinders especially when it comes to news about America and immediately jump on that news...no matter who writes or reports it and use it as fact. None of us will probably never really know a government  without corrupt elements in our lifetime. This world has so many views, religions, histories, morals...etc, etc. that there will always be a war somewhere, an argument, an accusation and someone yelling about this or that. But to focus on one country over and over and over again just because its the "in" thing to do...well then that is a sad state of affairs.

Anti-American?  The prisons are in European countries and Syria, so it's anti-World.  Stop the "Oh, another anti-American thread" BS coz you feel attacked.  If there were these prisons here, which I really don't know, I would criticize them as much as the ones mentioned in the article.  Don't play the anti-American card.

In all fairness, there are more threads that criticize the US government and their policies than any other type of thread on this forum.

I meant on the D&ST subforum. For the entire website, threads with sniper videos using that "let the bodies hit the floor" song are more common.

I thought there were more Israel-Palestine or Iraq War threads.  Either way, this is not anti-American.  If GWB government makes a mistake it's not Americans fault, if Rumania government allows this it's not Rumanians fault.

In my opinion, you must be just as brutal as the enemy if you want to beat them. While we try to detain and try them in court, they are suicide bombing, pussy sniping/mortaring and killing hundreds of innocent people every day through IEDs and car bombs. This is the reason why we have these prisons in other countries, so they won't necessarily have to follow the rules of the US.

Correction. THEY are secret jails, maintained by the CIA in foreign countries for foreign "terrorists".
