charlie wilson was the senator responsible for getting Stingers, among other weapons into afghanistan to fight the soviet union.
he was the one that thought afghanistan was "The Soviet Unions Vietnam".....so he took some delta operator and they started smuggling in weapons.....at the start it was out of wilsons own wallet, but after he got the ball rolling the government paid that bill.
its a really interesting story, if you ever get the chance read "Charlie Wilsons War".....i still laugh about how crazy he was when he was a senator.

the soviet union invaded afghanistan and installed a puppet government....they wanted to do to afghanistan what they did to the rest of the former com-bloc.
i was lucky enough to meet and sit down and talk with the commander of armed forces for the soviet union while they were in afghanistan. he found jesus when his heli crashed, so hes really open to discuss things that happened there. one of the things we talked about was a unit that he controlled that made TOYS INTO BOMBS.
i was also lucky enough to meet and talk with and get an autograph from charlie wilson......its a really interesting time in history.
it was the last TRUE holy war.
