Depends on what you want to use the system for. If you want to play boulderdash all day, I'd say get an old C64, you can get that for like $5 at a garagesale, and you just connect it to your TV. If you want to surf all day, then get the cheapest PC money can buy. Do you want to run around doing whatever you use your PC for, you'll want a laptop. If you want ease of use and installation, you might want a mac instead of an IBM compatible.
Do you have a monitor you'll want to keep ? etc. etc. etc. "build an awesome system" is kinda vague, dude... You need to specify what you want the system for oehterwise it'll likely not be awesome for that specific purpose !
