Ok, he called me down earlier, as he has this dilemma. He needs to build this swimming pool thing for a job I think, I duno, he just asked me to work this out:

https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/FFLink13/dadsimage-1.jpg
(birds eye view) (four 5.7 metre lengths, one 3.6 metre length)

That's the base line of the swimming pool. He needs to fit in three 2.4 metre long sheets in between each gap, to kind of create a circle. He just can't work out the measurements for it (neither can I). SO if someone could give me the angles that each sheet must go by, I'd appreciate it greatly.

So, I said I know some smart-ass people who can help (Que you lot)

Help would be greatly appreciated, just say if I missed something out.

Yeah thats what I thought, just a second ill draw a diagram and you tell me if this is what you mean

EDIT:

I now understand you.

Basically you will end up with a regular octagon.

Meaning that the degrees of each angle will equal: 135 degrees an angle

What do you mean by in between the gaps? Like this?

Don't forget to add the 3.6 m parts on the bottom there. That will change the angles. I'm still working on it currently.

Im going to quickly draw myself one by hand to see if I am correct, I am using a hazy old understanding and may be wrong, If I am ill do it the long way.

Ah, crap, you're right.

Will the 2.4m sides be curved?

Ok, I got it wrong. The total line at the bottom is 3.6 metres, so that's 1.8 each side

The two top section will be of 8.061017306
The two bottom ones will measure 6.074537019

By doing a quick sketch it looks as if it is impossible.

is the middle line 5.7 m as well at full length? or are both sides 5.7?

if they are it is impossible I believe.

both sides are 5.7m so there's four 5.7m lengths in total.

SHit, typo

Each section. I need to give link a lesson on technical drawing.

both sides are 5.7m so there's four 5.4m lengths in total.
As far as I can tell, it is impossible.

I might be wrong, so I'll let others who have an idea go for it.

Its impossible. For the Top 2 Sections at least.

The gap between the two ends of the sections is 8.06.......m

The 3 2.5m sheets are only 7.2... so you cannot do it

-----------------------

How I worked it Out-

Simple Pythagorus Theorum.

5.72 + 5.72 = length_between_them_2

64.98 = length_between_them_2

8.06 =  length_between_them_

Would it be possible if the boards aren't EXACTLY 2.4m? They can be cut down to size, as long as 3 boards are fitted in each gap, and those boards lengths are equal with a MAX length of 2.4 metres.

My dad didn't tell me it all...

The way I worked it out, was drawing a diagram of all the dimensions listed, I came to a halt when trying to make a triangle, I realised that one of the lengths was far too short.

I wont put my working as I've never been one to show it well.

For the top section to work, the boards need to be at least 2.73333333333333333m long (and only then they will just be a line... not a funky shape.

Pythagoras says: "No, your 2.4m boards are too short"

https://img503.imageshack.us/img503/9186/untitled1ue9.png

sqrt(5.7^2 + 5.7^2) > 3 * 2.4
