Palestine isn't a state: it is a legally a part of Israel.  Neither Iran nor Egypt fit your definitions, both are stable Democracies, and plenty of people of a variety of faiths (including Judaeism) live peacefully there.  Saudi Arabia is a Monarch supported by the US.

Egypt is a stable dictatorship with a notorious history of being home to some of the most violent terrorist organizations.  attacks against tourists were prevalent throughout the 90's and there has been a history of violence with the egyptian muslim brotherhood.

I actually laughed at some of those points.

"Illegal Mexicans would claim California.  The U.N. would make it legal.  Mexifornia would then kick the shit out of Oregon, Nevada and Arizona."
That, I found was really funny.

Wow.  Massive country which is still modernising is having teething problems.  How amazing!  It's not like the exact same thing happened in Europe during the reformation.  Oh............wait..................

I'm rather suprised that they ain't in total destruction already and why do they insist of having constant war with each other.

Also not only do they have it bad down there the religion screws up the equalness between man and woman. At least here in the more modern contries the woman have power, down in Iraq or wherever it was, they have little to no power over the men. I wouldn't go there unless I got a huge check of money and had an APC to drive around in or a tank.

The Middle East sounded like a decent place before the Advent of Islam (no offence) - I wonder what Iran/Persia would be like if they stayed Zoroastrian.

There's a few rich Zoroasters in todays world, sounds like a good businessman man religion like Judaism.

Funny how they were the biggest progressor of technology up onto the end of the middle ages. Right about the time of the crusades and the beginning of the wests meddling in their affairs. Then it was to kill them for being none believers, now its for their oil.

well, the only reason why they haven't destroyed each other by now, is us, the western nations. We keep starting foul "peace processes" and sign "road maps", which then in turn are undermined regularly by the same people we are trying to help. And the so-called "palestinian government" is a puppet regime that has no control over the radicals who supposedly elected them.

It's useless, it really is. The only good thing about this is that Isreal will be safe for a while, as long as palestinians keep killing each other.

Iranian female police officers will find it very easy to catch and bust people, simply cause they can't see through the tears of laughter running down their faces. I mean those things they're wearing must cause som sort of hindrance. (Gotta love the dive)

lets focus on the topic at hand, the middle east.  for the majority of recorded history, the middle east has been under the control of those who call it home.  for the last few hundred years, up until 1922, the ottoman empire was responsible for the lack of organization and neglect of most of the middle east.  we're talking about egypt and the ottmans ran egypt until 1882 when they british gave them their own unofficial autonomy, which the turks didnt dispute.  so we can safely say that egypt has had 125 years to develope as its own nation.  the fact that its number one money maker is tourism (without it, egypt will go under) doesnt help it go farther than what that could offer.

the sad part is, egypt was once known as the bread basket of the region.  but because of the stupidity of the nationalism, nasser (an egyptian dictator that ruled directly after the royalty was outted) was responsible for building the answa (spelling?) dam and in effect, defertilizing (is that word?) the nile river delta.  After Nasser we have Sadat, another dictator, who wasnt such a bad guy.  He was the first head of state of an Arab nation to officially recognize Israel.  he proved his ability as a great statesman with his willingness to compromise.  he also began to allow for more democracy in his country by allowing opposition parties to exist, (accept for the egyptian muslim brotherhood, one of the forefathers of middle easter terrorism) but guess what, he was assinated by members of his own military during a review.  After that, we have the current president of egypt, General Hosni Mubarack.  Another dictator who is U.S. friendly.  but he outlawed any opposition until very recently and he has been the head of state and government for the last nearly 30 years.

history proves that egypt is not another example in your model of evil western imperialism.  blame the ottomans for it, but if you wanna keep it real, blame the fuckin egyptians.

To be quite frank, most of Africa and the Middle East would be better off with Europe or the Ottomans running things nowadays.

Yes, some very badly drawn borders certainly don't help things any in these regions, but in addition to this, empires tend to have a stabilizing effect in very poor countries that have ethnic strife.  If an external power arrives that is both powerful enough and brutal enough, then order eventually is established.  It's certainly not a moral approach to things, but it does work -- as long as costs are kept managable.

The problem with empires is how expensive they are to maintain.  Nowadays, the cheapest way to maintain an empire is through multi-national corporations.  Of course, they're far better at maintaining trade than order.....
