Oh, and some people seem to forget that only about 50% of oil use in the US is vehicle driven. The rest are used for industry/manufacturing purposes. Don't any of you Europeans think that your plastics and synthetics aren't made from the same oil.
Firstly, when the oil in the ME runs out that's it. There maybe oil in other areas but that's where the 'load comes from. The price of oil will skyrocket so much after that, that people will simply be forced to find alternatives. I can see us making proper alternatives to oil for making power. What i can't see is Plastics/Lubrication for mechanical things and all that essential stuff. Vegetable oil?
The idea of "well X area has some oil" and "we got lots in reserve" is quite frankly, stupid. We need to get our act together and find a solution to our oil problem. It's a worldwide problem, but you can't deny the U.S is the worst. I'm guessing Europe/China/India aren't too far behind. The richest countries should start investing heavily into oil before it becomes too late. In 20 years time, once China/India have fully developed, it will be chaos if there isn't viable solutions.

there are many studies happening right now and even programs in place to start weening us all of energy dependency.
frozen methane, for example is said to be one option.....and then there are the windmills that are already in place all over the world, which im sure will be expanded in the future.

Yes, we consume more than anyone, partly because we have a population bigger than most countries and we are more industrial than anyone in the world. My biggest complaint is the constant shutting down of oil refineries in the United States itself. We haven't built a new refinery in like 20 years and we have shut down many since then.....why? Only to control the market and make more money. Keep the supply down and the price goes up. We are not at war over oil and I get tired of hearing that. That is my opinion and you can flame me all you want. We don't even import most of our oil from the middle east, most of it comes Canada, Venezuela and Russia and our own reserves.
If we we wanted oil that badly then we would just go and take it every where it is...instead of invading the Middle east, we should just start a war with Canada and take its vast resources, it would be a hell of a lot easier and we wouldn't have to travel so far...war for oil is the most ridiculous notion of the anti-war crowd, if you take a look at the big picture, it would make no sense and show me anything, anywhere that shows that we are benefiting, oil wise, because of the war in Iraq. Oh yes, we have all the oil we want now.....NOT! We do not touch the oil in Iraq for our own country and there are plenty of watch dogs making sure of that. Anyhow, when our own companies and government decide to wake up and stop trying to make the almighty dollar by controlling our own reserves and finally build new and more efficient facilities and reopen the ones we already have, then I would be more worried about war for oil. But in reality, the more gasoline costs, the more the pockets are lined for all these oil companies and the tax money gained on each gallon we use. Just look at the top ten companies in the world, most are oil companies....the question i ask is HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED?

"superpower", like we arent.......we set the trends the world follows, and are the ones that saves everyones asses when they get into shit.
I already knew USA had a excessive oil usage, and I already knew that they don't have that much themselves.
But I was still surprised at the diagram/statistic. And now I know that the middle east has a shitload of petroleum.
Discussing with ignorant patriots is something I don't wanna spend more of my vaulable time on.
now you know that the middle east has "a shitload of petroleum"??....congrats, your only about 70 years behind the rest of the world.
maybe you can spend some of your "vaulable" time on spelling?
I'll bet that most others here didn't know that the Middle East has that large amounts of oil.
But I'll bet you do, after all you're the one attacking the country and killing women children for a liquid that makes your car go faster.
the amount of oil that the ME possesses is pretty common knowledge, its a shame you didnt decide to educate yourself until now.CruZ4dR wrote:

Asking if the map represents strategic oil reserves, undrilled oil in Alaska and other areas, and the amount of oil Canada has.
But I guess that is not relevant.

They say "proved reserves at end of 2006". Now what more do you need?
If you can't prove you have any more oil, then how can we count in an additional unknown amount of oil?
from what i understand Candian oil reserves are mixed with sand so the quality is shit nevermind the expensive costs involved to drill and then seperate oil from sand.usmarine2005 wrote:

Tree hugers wont let you anywhere near Alaska
Gulf of mexico is too dangerous given the drilling depth and those little pesky hurricanes.

the connection i made with poker is that your intent with this thread wasnt to discuss oil issues in the US, but to take a swing at the US with the lame "down with the US" crowd.CruZ4dR wrote:

Also to display the statistics as well.
This really was a silly thread. The statistics are obvious, the U.S. consumes many times the oil it can produce, and so buys oil from many nations. How this pertains to the U.S. "not being a superpower if not for oil" is beyond me.CruZ4dR wrote:

What ifs are silly, we aren't going to magically run out of oil instantaneously. Someone in the Middle East isn't going to wake up in the morning and go "OH MY GOD WE JUST RAN OUT OF OIL!!1!!!1!1one!!1!".
I know the US is the largest user of petrolium, but I have to wonder if these statistics take into account the size of the US. How many other fully industrialized/technologized countries have a population of 300 million against which our usage can truly be compared?
Ignoring is not the same as simply not having seen it. I don't hang around the internets that often.Parker wrote:

I won't take the "setting straight" think further on a serious topic. It's not relevant.
If you choose to believe that my intentions was to attack the US, then be my guest.
You may have interpreted that I'm no big fan. Still, I manage to keep my head clear in an argument.
But fair enough, you're entitled to have your own opinion. There is no more to discuss between us.
