"The American Medical Association will be deciding this month whether or not to recommend that video game and Internet addiction should be included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, reports the Wall Street Journal on its Health Blog.

The House of Delegates, the AMA's decision-making body, will vote on the issue later this month. If it decides that excessive gaming constitutes a mental disorder, the decision will then be passed upward to the American Psychiatric Association, which has the final say on these matters.

The decision to vote on the issue comes from a recommendation made by Mohamed K. Khan--chairman of the Council on Science and Public Health--in a 10-page report entitled "Emotional and Behavioural Effects, Including Addictive Potential, of Video Games."

Khan writes that "although video game overuse can be associated with any type of video game," the most common to exhibit signs of addiction were players of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, such as World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, or EverQuest. He stated, "Current data suggest these individuals are somewhat marginalised socially, perhaps experiencing high levels of emotional loneliness and/or difficulty with real-life social interactions. Current theory is that these individuals achieve more control of their social relationships and more success in social relationships in the virtual reality realm than in real relationships."

The report states that video game overuse most closely resembles the behaviours associated with pathological gambling. Alongside adults, dependence-like behaviours were also said to be found in children, although it was unclear whether gamers experienced traditional "withdrawal symptoms" when unable to play. The report reads, "Some excessive users do not exhibit any 'cravings' for the games if they are unavailable, while other users insist they cannot reduce the time they spend on the games."

We? Judging by all the anti-WoW rhetoric from everyone here (including me), us loonies aren't so addicted. Some people are though, and i do think it is a problem.

I wonder if Liberalism will also be classified as such?

A year or so ago i was chatting to a guy in my squad and he was describing how his computer had been crashing.  While I was trying to work out what the problem was he mentioned that he had been playing BF2 solidly for almost 38 hours and the computer was overheating   As much as I'm addicted to computers there's no way I could play for even a quarter of that time in a row.

I was thinking about that.  A while back i had to revert back to dial up for 5 weeks and i found out how much i was addicted to the Internet.  Was quite scary to realise.

What's funny is that the side-effects sound worst than the cause.

Well Michael Savage says Liberalism IS a mental disorder.

People with addictive personalities can become addicted to anything they like more than themselves.

The question is how serious is the withdrawl?  Let's be real here.  People withdrawing from alcohol, heroin, Xanax and the like can be brutal withdrawls requiring medical observation while you're going through them.  Trust me, I know.

How bad could video game withdrawl be?  I imagine they would experience irratability and maybe a sense of loss, perhaps even loneliness from missing on-line friends, real or imaginary.

But puh-lease you can't compare video game addiction to alcohol/drug addiction.

You know of course what would be gained by classifying video game addiction as a disease don't you?

It would FORCE insurance companies to pay for pyscological care for those effected.  Yup, just more money for doctors and another reason for insurance companies to raise their rates.

This is just another example of the sissifying of America.  Poor Johnny spent to much time playing BF2.  Now he can't get a job.  Let's get him a doctor and some councilling, oh and how could we forget his medication.  Oh, poor Johnny can't work.  I have an idea, let's give him welfare too!

It's all the Liberals fault !

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . . .  .

It depends.

If you're not eating normal meals, becoming anti-social and spending more than 10 hours at a time on your computer/with your console...yeah.

If you're like me and can stop playing games after being addicted for so long (which I did with BF2 until i got a new computer...still going!), you're fine.

Well it has to be something.  When I was growing up, women would never play video games.  Now they do.  Nobody sat in front of a computer screen and played a game for 12 hours straight.

I see boys in school with bigger tits than the girls....wtf?

In most, no.

They wouldn't suffer withdrawal symptoms.

In some, yes.

Those that would suffer withdrawal symptoms (however minor).

I can imagine all the lawsuits.  "Your honour, I was unfairly fired for being off work ill for 3 months, my W.O.W addiction is a debilitating condition that is a recognised mental illness."

Judge to employers "So you telling me you tried to make an employee with a known addiction to this this game come in to work while he was part of a major crusade?  You realise the depression and suffering that would cause if he has to leave the computer."

I wonder if talking constantly about how much you hate Liberalism can be classified as such? I mean shit, that's all some people talk about. Liberalism is the worlds biggest problem, this and that. I mean fuck sake, listen to yourself you sound like a mental fool. I'm not a Liberal, but when people go on and on, it's just fucked up.

Too much gaming isn't a mental disorder, just basic irresponsibility if you're ignoring other things that that have to be done.  Isolate yourself from society and family and friends to play all the time?  Could be a mental disorder.

Playing too many video games could be an addiction but is definitley not a mental disorder, a person could be addicted to anything food, religion, sports, television, sex etc. But calling it a mental disorder is ridiculous.
