A convicted double murderer in Texas is holding a joke contest on the Internet so he can use the winning entry as his last words when he is sentenced to die by lethal injection on June 26.

"I'll be enjoying my last days on this earth ... I am asking you to spread the word that I am holding a contest. I want people to send me their best jokes, to keep me and the others with (execution) dates laughing!" Patrick Knight, 39, told CNN Friday in an interview from his prison.

Convicted of murdering two neighbors in 1991, Knight has spent the last 16 years on death row in Texas, the state that accounts for more than one third of all US executions since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

Relaxed and cracking jokes, Knight got all serious when he explained why death row needed an injection of humor.

"We have a situation back there where you have guys that are actually innocent -- I'm not one of them ... Jokes are needed back there, something to ease the tension."

However, Knight betrayed no tension when he said, "Death is my punishment, I've accepted that, that's what's gonna happen. If you got to go, go with a smile."

The idea for a contest, he said came from reading "Dead Man Walking," a book on capital punishment by Helen Prejean, a Roman Catholic nun and advocate for the abolition of the death penalty, which was turned into a Hollywood movie starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon.

So Knight, tongue in cheek, titled his webpage on the Internet, "Dead Man Laughing."

Knight promised to read the winning entry out loud when he is asked for his last statement before he is put to death next June 26.

Any person who murdered an innocent person (2!) doesn't deserve to die laughing.

I agree with Mekstizzle on this one.  He doesn't deserve to ride the lightning happily. I'm sure his victims did not die peacefully or without pain.

Do you realy need the death penelty? There are far worser fates than death and as you can see this man has accepted his fate so it is'nt realy a punishment anymore.

The death penalty is so inefficient and morally questionable that they should just get rid of it.

Death penalty shouldn't last for 30 years, just end it within a week, what's the point of wasting all that time anyway.

The death penalty is good, the problems are:
the numerous appeals
the long wait until the execution
the costs involved

It should not cost more to put someone to death than it does to give them life in prison.
I do believe this is the case in most death penalties.

I do not know what is worse; making an innocent person suffer in prison for life or executing them.
The legal system is not perfect and if you are one of the innocent people framed or convicted for something you didn't do I feel bad for you. I don't think that means all the people who are guilty should be able to live life in prison and cost tax payers millions/billions of dollars that could be spent helping the community. Why is the medical treatment free in prison with faster service (shorter lines)? The majority of murderers should be executed. If rape or child molestation can be proven without doubt execution should be the sentence. Sure some people can change, but in most cases they do not deserve the chance. There are things you do and things you do not do and most people learn that very young. I have no sympathy for someone who kills, rapes or assaults another person without justification. I do not believe rape can ever be justified. Violent crime shall not be tolerated. Someone guilt of breaking and entering into residential structures should face severe penalties. You have no right to be in someone else's home without their permission. There is no reason why someone with a bag of weed should go to prison while someone who commits violent crimes or steals from others serves little or no time incarcerated.

Thats my rant and I know people who have committed crimes of different degrees and it seems like the judicial system has their priorities all out of wack.
