Hillary Clinton did 911

I dunno...from the outside, the USA seemed happier under Bill Clinton's rule...his secretary sucked his dick, thats about it?

I think you and I have had this discussion before, but I still maintain that Carter's up there in the top 10.
Carter was pretty bad, but he's not as bad as Andrew Johnson was.

While JFK is overrated, he did handle the Cuban Missile Crisis well.  I don't think he'd be remembered as fondly if he hadn't been assassinated though....

Bullshit...  Do you realize the Republicans were the ones continually pushing for intervention at that time?  Do you realize that, if a Republican had been president then, we would have probably taken over Cuba and likely started WW3 as a result?  JFK made plenty of mistakes, but given the circumstances, I'd say he dealt with Cuba better than most would have.

At least, he was more rational than his hawkish opposition.

Why, so critics could call him an armchair quarterback? Just can't say a bad word about our leaders without being labeled these days.

CIA and military laid the basis for the cuban missile crisis. Millitary bases in turkey and the CIA funded and supervised bay of pigs invasion formed the basis for tensions. During the crisis the navy was begging to invade an island with nuclear artiliery and a leader who, while he did not have permission to use these weapons, may have easily been intimidated enough to use them. If not for the firm foot JFK put down, the navy may well have lost many a good man in the second event of nuclear warfare known to man. Who knows what may have followed. Remember that JFK is the only thing that stood between the navy and landing troops.

I hate his views on immigration but you have to give the guy credit he does the right thing regardless or what the liberal media portrays him of doing. In 30 years Bush will be looked upon as the reason we are not recovering from a nuclear holocaust and speaking farsi. Doing the right thing is never the easy thing to do.

Not sure what you are saying.  We can play hypothetical all day.  I am sure you know the repubs wanted to stay out of WWII, and it was the dems who wanted to go to war.

That changed after WW2.  After WW2, the Republicans became the hawks.  By comparison, Democrats were still interventionist, but less so than the Republicans.  Senator McCarthy is a good example of the fierce hawkishness of the Republicans after WW2.

Also, read jonsimon's post.  He gives a good summary of the backstory for the crisis.

More like...  If we had invaded Cuba before Castro took power, no missile crisis.  If we had gone in there and taken out Castro after the aristocracy fell but before he established himself, Cuba would be a democracy today.

That would be a good idea for another thread...unless one has already been created. I have always wondered if Kennedy was that good.

As far as the Bay of pigs.. have you guys seen the declassified CIA documents? (yay freedom of information act) My take on the bay of pigs is that Kennedy was getting setup by the CIA. They knew with absolute certainty that it would fail. To me it seems they were hoping that it would force Kennedy's hand into military action in Cuba thus escalating tensions with the Soviets. The Soviets would probably respond by taking Berlin. There were some deranged people in Kennedy's administration. Some were suggesting that a Nuclear war was winnable.. it might just cost a few million people. Kennedy showed amazing resiliency under pressure.

I think blaming that on him is a bit much.  Fundamentalism was on the rise anyone, the Iranian revolution just gave it a national government as a focal point.  Further, the situation wouldn't have been that bad if earlier administrations hadn't decided to install and support an unpopular dictatorship.

The worst effects of the Bush administration are yet to come. When you have a big tax cut and a war at the same time, you have an economic disaster. Bush may be lucky enough to be out of office before the economic time-bomb goes off, but it will.
