Hey guys - got a few questions

ok so i currently use onboard sound, tbh i'd like to hear some better sounds from bf2/2142, so i'm thinking about getting this : http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI … tID=527290 to go with this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI … tID=565170

around £50-60 is the budget for a soundcard/headset ... what do you guys think of the two above?

Is the sound card 5.1? i think it is but just to check ...

in bf2/2142 i'll be setting the sound to hardware but can i put the quality on extra high??

also, being OEM - does that x-fi require any other cabling etc. or does it simply slot into the mobo PCI slot???

karma for helps!!

cheers,
mitch

OEM just means you don't get any audio cables and you'll only probably get a driver CD with it. It wont come in a pretty box with instructions either.

With some you may get an optical cable or something like that, you only need the cables from your speakers though.

ahhh ok that's np, i plan on getting that 5.1 headset anyways ... i'm just worried the OEM will not come with any internal cables required for the thing to work

You dont need any internal cables, you just plug slide it into a free PCI slot and voila......nice sound!

That is soooo cheap for an X-Fi card.   I checked my local supplier and they absolutely do NOT recommend that card for gaming.  It's meant for basic, although X-Fi rated, audio and doesn't have all the "thing-a-ma-bobs" and "whatchamacallits" the better cards do.

I have the X-Fi platnum and it is awesome, I recommend the added funds to get at least the ExtremeGamer edition:

I thought it was even cooler when I saw the micro hardware it was packin:

Nobody tells you this but the new XtremeMusic's have a heatsink on the Creative chip, mine did.  Be sure to plug it in using the 4-pin floppy power connector on the top of the card.  I'm not sure what it does but it probably gives the card more juice so it couldn't hurt.

so what settings will it run at? and what happens if you set your sound too high for the card to handle?

seems like a fine combination to me. but why all of you say, that the x-fi extreme audio is crap? all i want is to use hardware rendering on high settings with eax on. isn´t that possible with that card?

You do not need such amazing sound cards. It's all bullshit. Unless you are going to be playing 7.1 surround sound speakers at high volume....then get your first choice. It's perfect.

i dunno what to do tbh - what sound settings will the first run at?

The X-Fi XtremeMusic will run BF2 on the X-Fi setting which is 128 voices.  At present there isn't much that supports above 128 voices let alone up to 128 voices.

The only things i've seen that support 128 voices are BF2, WoW, and one or more of the Unreal Tournament 2K games.

WoW must be tweaked to use it though, as there is a glitch that prevents the game from using all 128 voices with hardware acceleration still enabled.

http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs … ge.id=1008

Which can be fixed by doing this: Go to My Computer, select your hard drive that has WoW installed in it, click program files, click World of Warcraft, click on the WTF folder, then click on Config.wtf and add this:

SET SoundOutputSystem "1"

ya you should I bought the medusa headset with the Xfi music card and had all kinds of trouble with it.  Those headphones don't like the xfi chips.  you should check out their forums, tons of threads from people having problems with them.

Don´t get the USB Version. It has an build in soundchip. You don´t even need a sound card to use it.I had this usb head a while ago and its bulls**t.Now I have your first combination of headset and soundcard(but my soundcard is the pro gamer edition). This combination works great.
