Most Religions have a message of peace and they teach to love and respect other people.  Let's take the three Abrahamic Religions.  Two of them even share the same book, The Old Testament.  The Qu'ran itself quotes a lot of things from the Bible, and Jesus is one of the three most important characters for Islam.  This talks about common origins.

Do Religions fail?  Or is mankind which fails to act accordingly to the teachings of any religion?  I personally don't follow any religion, but I respect people who do.  But, how many people really follow these teachings?  How many of them respect other people?  How Many Religious People Live by "the rules" and honor their Faith?  Are Religions the ones to blame for the never ending conflicts between Arabs and Jews?  Is Christianism the one to blame for the ethnic cleansing of native Americans (not only in the US, but also Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, etc)?  Or do men use religions as an excuse to commit these crimes?

Can a relion succeed, or merely survive?

If success is survival, I think mankind fails.

No, because religion as a system of beliefs, was created by mankind.  If you are religious you may believe that God created us, but the codes, rules and laws of religion are a creation of mankind.

I do not agree. Maybe the beginning of religion was heavily forced upon men by god. So maybe it was the FEAR of god that created religion?(Or love?)
And since it was God who created us(lets just say that)it was him who created us to believe in him. But this may be denied in the Bible somehow
And maybe take it to the point that if God revealed himself then religion would not be belief in God but it would be worshipness.

Mankind is just fucked up and fails on many levels.  We are selfish and greedy individuals who pollute and rape our planet, and we breed like a virus.  As Bertster says, religion is just another of our many failings.  Lets face it the world would be a better place without us.

Well we are the only living thing on the planet that isn't really in balance with our surroundings. Religion itself creates more problems than it'll solve, people can solve problems without being religious, but I doubt as many problems would arise in the world if there was no religion at all.

that's a bit to much of a depresive attitude for me, although almost everything you said is completely true mankind is also totally fu*king fantastic.

of all the animals on this planet we have thrived and become the most successfully species, we have improved/evolved generation after generation for millions of years, so that now we live in a world with beer, sports, computers, global travel/communication and Jessica Alba.

obviously we've made some f*ck ups along the way and maybe religion is one of those,
like religion probably worked fine when you only had 1 country and everyone was the same religion there, then its lots of "give to the poor" and "help thy neighbour"

but when everyone found there was these other countries with other religions it became "smite thee unbeliever" and "god shall smote thee"

in conclusion........mankind created beer an religion, beer = good, religion = bad. lets call it a draw.

P.S

unless a GOD really did exist and did create Religion, then he has one sick sense of humour !

Religion is present to give mankind a purpose; something to believe in, to live for.  Some need a purpose in order to survive.  To say that one religion is right and all others fail is ridiculous, but instead heavily influenced by culture.  Most religions were created to control lives, to dominate women and to generally meet the needs of those who claimed to be in contact with god (priests etc).
Ideals have lived on through the ages hence why we have religion today.  To say that if you do not believe in one religion is wrong - what about people living in Africa / 3rd World Countries who are, in most respects, untouched by Western beliefs and so consequently ignorant of Western religions (Christianity etc.) - are they going to hell because they never knew about others beliefs?   No.  So why would God put us in the situation where half of us are blessed enough to have knowledge about religion, whilst simultaneously damning everyone else to hell.
That is why religion and mankind fail.

I believe in God, certainly not in the common sense though.

I certainly admire what religion is intended to accomplish, but like us it has to evolve with us to succeed.  To cling to dated beliefs when we now know far more about ourselves (but far from all) is folly.

Live 1 day at a time and do what's required of you to survive.  That's the only "creed" you really have to follow, as all other animals do.

I believe that religion is just mankind's attempt to put what every living thing already "knows" into words, and it falls short miserably and always will.

Man will always be more complex than his beliefs.

Religion it's self is good for some people.
The (i hate to use this word) Extremists who take religion so far as to imply laws, and intwine intellegent decisions for the country with there beliefs is absolute failure to serve there country.
It just pisses me off that creation is taught in schools more then evolution... It's insane. I wish my school would teach creation i would burn them every step of the way
I would have so much fun! Questioning the teachers beliefs untill he cracks.
Fun Fun Fun.

My conclusion.
Religion is not failure.
Mankind that takes religion from more then a belief, to a lifestyle, failure.
