Fuel ration sparks Iranian protest

Iranian youths have set fire to a Tehran petrol station in protest after the government introduced fuel rationing.

Iran, the second largest crude producer among the Opec members, announced it would introduce petrol rationing for motorists from Wednesday.

Despite its huge energy reserves, Iran lacks refining capacity and has to import about 40 per cent of its petrol needs, a sensitive issue when world powers have threatened fresh sanctions over a row with Tehran over its nuclear programme.

A witness said flames rose from the petrol station in Pounak, a poorer area of the capital, with cars burning inside.

Some youths hurled stones and chanted, "Guns, fireworks, tanks, [President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad should be killed!" the witness said.

Another witness said riot police had gathered near the station and sought to push the rioters back.

Heavy burden

Iran's imports are also a heavy burden on state coffers because all fuel, whether imported or domestically produced, is sold at heavily subsidised prices.

Even after a 25 per cent price hike, fuel is still sold at just 1,000 rials [11 US cents] a litre.

The announcement followed months of uncertainty about how and when rationing would be implemented.

A major part of the debate between parliament and government has focused on whether drivers would be allowed to buy extra fuel at market prices.

Tuesday's announcement made no mention of that.

"The government, by being completely committed to implementing the law, will exert all its efforts to decrease any possible limitations for people," state television said.

Monthly limit

It said private cars, which cannot also burn compressed natural gas, would get 100 litres of petrol per month. Some cars in Iran can burn both types of fuel and those vehicles would receive a smaller petrol ration, according to the state television.

For the time being, private drivers would be able to buy their daily allocation up to four months in advance, it said, adding that this period could later be extended to six months.

Official taxis which only consume petrol would get 800 litres per month, while other drivers who have part-time taxis will get 600 litres per month. Government cars will get 300 litres per month.

All petrol is already sold using electronic "smart" cards.

Yeah, guess they figure being able to power their cities is more important than having their own fuel.  How silly of them.

Well, if it's nuclear weapons you want to discuss perhaps I should starting pointing out the numerous defensive applications

The word on the street is. . . .

That the Iranians are conserving their fuel to give to their military during the impending conflict with the USA. . . . i.e. fuel for tanks, jets, apc's, trucks etc.  They need all the fuel they can muster. . .

You guys realize that the Iranians have all but declared war "in name" against the USA. . . . they have already entered into Iraq this week on the 24th and 25th by helicopter (Revolutionary Guard units) in response to a possible US Marine landing in Southern Iran. . . .

You guys also know we (USA) just sent another carrier strike group WITH Marines into the region (going to be the largest US military presence EVER off of the Iranian coast) i.e. USS Enterprise Strike Group, joining the USS Stennis and USS Nimitz strike groups. . . . . Do you guys realize how much firepower is off the coast of Iran??? Guided missile destroyers, all kinds of fighter jets, Marine Expeditionary units, attack helicopters, submarines. . . . . oh with tactical nuclear missles too btw. . . . .

Not too mention, former UN ambassador John Bolton saying "sanctions and negotiations have failed, and that millitary action is the likely the course forward with Iran."

The showdown has begun. . . . or is reaching its climax within the coming months!

Well, there haven't.  It's basically consisted of the US declaring that Iran can't have nuclear power, end of story.

I like how its always irans fault.

"Look!!  Their response to our act of war is an act of war!! how dare they keep provoking us by not just rolling over and accepting it when we give guns to their enemies in iraq or 'allegedly' allow our soldiers to enter their country!!"

Nobody needs to do anything, if they keep pissing off their own people, they'll rebel and boot 'em out, if Iranian history has taught me anything, they do stuff like that.

Though they need to get rid of things like "Supreme Ayatollah" and shitty religious positions like that.

I'll admit, it does sound odd that they want Nuclear Power yet can't use the money for that, for better refineries and power plants.

so on the whole refinery issue?  why don't they have more capacity to refine?  is there some critical part this is manufactured somewhere that they can't make themselves?  i mean if that was the case, where did the first refinery come from?  do they not have Petroleum Engineering as a curriculum in their universities?  Why don't they put money in increasing their capacity?  i would expect that this would be much more trivial in comparison to say ... nuclear power, plus alot safer overall.

if they wanted more capacity for refineries, i'm sure there would be all kinds of investors banging on their door to help out.  So, is it a matter of desire, money, technical capability?  what?

Have you been tapping all communications with Iran from your command bunker again?  No wonder my internet is slow.

Perhaps there just really concerned about the environment and dont want to increase there refining capacity as they believe it will lead to an increase in Co2 emissions. Think positive people! Maybe, just maybe there not that bad....

How paranoid would Americans get if Iran had a carrier strike group in the Gulf of Mexico?  Or 2?  Or 3?

they have every right to be paranoid.  but its not an issue about paranoia, its about inevitability.

Inevitability of war between the US and Iran?  I don't agree with that.  Diplomatic pressure can be successful.

who is it that sells them the refined kerosine/petrol then as i'd think the best pressure on iran would be to stop selling it them untill they decommision their nucleur plants or at least comply to some of the UN's wishes.

not when it gets sabotaged from within.

I just dont see a peaceful solution satisfying this admin or anyone else involved with PNAC.

The same way we're not leaving Iraq for next few years.  Gauranteed. we're not just NOT leaving, but were gonna send more and more troops in.
