right well, im kinda excited about this.

i got a copy of Vista Ultimate from work.

a legit copy, they said i could install it as they have it allready on there systems.

now the question is.

should i install it?

i have been told that you cant use Hardware Accelerated sounds on Vista, which means i wont be able to use my X-fi on ultra high setting on vista for bf2 right?

ive been told this not shure if its true.

anyway,

advantages are DX10, i do have a DX10 card.

im just a bit iffy aswell as to some compatablity issues with some drivers.

i would like to hear from the people that have Vista, is it worth it or should i stay on XP?

regards.

I personally haven't had a single problem with Vista, that may be because I'm lucky, don't have anything that needs old drivers and/or the OS was installed on a brand new system. Personally I would wait until you actually need it for a DX10 game. Everyone else will say don't though.

Creative released new drivers with EAX support and that pretty much solves the sound issue with the x-fi. however I tried vista on my computer and noticed a performance decrease when playing BF2 (I have 2 gig and a 3700+). I guess it's a matter of personal taste but since BF2 is pretty much the only game I play, I want it to run as smooth as possible. Aside from that I dont really see improvements in vista aside from the nicer desktop.
I'm going to wait until I build a new pc next year or something - until then I wont bother with vista and stick to xp

you might as well give it a try tho and switch back to xp afterwards, if you dont like it

I've had problems with the 64 bit vista while playing BF2, but it works fine on the 32bit and everything else works fine.

BTW, if your mic doesn't work when you install your sound drivers, just look at the volume... Vista puts it on the minimum when it starts so you,ll think it's not working for hours while trying to figure out what's wrong...

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I'm very pleased with it. (after upgrading to a dual core, single core just couldn't mange the OS and gaming)

Depends. If u got 2GB of RAM then yeah why not. There are SOME issues with Vista that I encountered when I was using.

Video drivers are still a bit iffey - maybe they will work, maybe they wont. I had (well actually still have) drivers issues with
my dual 8800's and encountered a small problem with Nero. Vista recommends using Nero as burning software, but damned
if I could use it.
Less than 2GB RAM - then NOT AT ALL. Vista needs 1/2GB RAM just to run. 1GB will actually = about 1/2GB for games. 1.5GB RAM=1GB for
games..... you get the picture

your sound might be bad beyond comparison. I have a creative audigy 4 (so, not an x-fi) and creative are yet to release real drivers for it. It sounds like complete shit compared to XP. However, they support x-fi a  lot more and released drivers including all software, and some more to fix bugs. x-fi only.

I just custom built a comp, and put XP on it, only because Vista is new, i believ ANY OS that is new is bound to have bugs, i always give it about 1-2 years for the company to fix them up, and then upgrade...
everything i write is a ramble and should not be taken seriously.... seriously.

I'm afraid to install Vista. I'll need some convincing as well....

yes! vista 64 bit sucks ass for playing games tbh.  It's a freaking slide show in bf2.  I've been getting weird blue screens too.  If you don't have to imo don't vista..

I like Vista so far.  It's obviously new and has some kinks in the armor but hopefully most will be taken care of in the following patches.  It's a bit of a memory hog but nothing to noticeable, a few dropped frame rates here and there and sporadic bits of minor lag.

I'd say go for it, the pros outweigh the cons.
