Scape goat, yes. Guilty, yes. Others should have gone to jail too, yes. Got away with it because of code of silence. YES!!

You assure us? WTF? What are you, working at the Pentagon or Langley or something?!?!?!? So it's only bad if someone turns up dead? Hold the trial up, we just have to see if anyone ends up floating face down in a river in Lagos ......

The Republicans hang a covert agent out to dry for partisan political reasons and it's "tch, tch, well no one got hurt". What did you vote last time? Let me guess.

Here's a tip people, it has to work both ways. I cry laughing at some of the people on these forums bashing Democrats and apologising for Republicans on exactly the same issues (and vice versa). It's called hypocrisy, H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y.

And I still can't believe you  guys elect judges. Because populism works so well with the legislative branch. I'm quite happy with our English model appointed judges with tenure. Strangely enough once they are in they tend to apply the law rather than listen to the mob.

Scooter should have served some time. Maybe not 2.5 years, but what was the maximum sentence? It could have been worse. Hey, Paris served more time than Scooter, now that's a laugh!!!!

Because Harmor has a grudge against the CIA and thinks that Republicans should be immune from prosecution. Isn't it obvious?

A democracy is supposed to hold members of its government accountable when they break the very laws they are employed to protect and serve.

A dictatorship is when the top men can make up and tell the people anything they want and then when found out, are pardoned, taking a huge dump on democracy.

It's interesting that all of you who don't actually live in America have all these opinions on what it's really like here.

We could go on for ages with a point/counterpoint about what life is really like here, but since those of you outside the US only have short visits and/or media reports to go off of, it will be nearly impossible to convince you of the truth. The bulk of US and international media is so slanted that anyone who disagrees is a brainwashed right-wing zombie. There's no point in trying to share the reality with those of you who are convinced that you know so much about life here because you watched the "news".

The bottomline is you are only limited by yourself in this country. If you start out from nothing, you have multiple opportunities to make something of yourself and contribute effectively to society. You also have the chance to mooch off the public teat for your entire life. You won't get anywhere, but you will certainly soak those of us who do for every tax dollar you can.

All this "white corporate oppression" is an excuse from those who aren't willing to do the hard work it takes to succeed...and those who don't know anything about life in the US (firsthand, at least).

As for Libby: OK...he lied to federal prosecutors. There are many who have who endured a lighter sentence or no sentence at all (a former President comes to mind...no pun intended). At least Libby is serving some kind of punishment for perjury. The fact that the investigation that started this should have been dropped long before it ever got to Libby is somewhat irrelevant. Libby lied when questioned. Now he's a federal convict (more than Clinton got).

Plame is in just as much danger now as she was before she was "outed"--exactly none. This kind of partisan bickering in my country drives me absolutely nuts. We can't just go about the business of running the country--it's not enough that one side wins...the other must lose. That simply isn't good for the country.

Honestly why does something like this turn into Republican vs. Democrat? It really has nothing to do with that at all.

What you should do if you want to sound smart is find out what happened in the trial. Then ask yourself whether the punishment was fair, did he get more/less than he deserved, was the commut fair/unfair, should the president have that kind of power to use, etc...

I think it's bull that he simply replaced jail time with a $250,000 fine. You should never be able to pay yourself out of jail.

I think he should have been completely pardoned.  He really didn't do anything.  This was a giant smear.  A faithful public servant's lifetime work, record and image has been tarnished.

Bush catches crap about it?  You betcha.  Hell, at least he didn't do this.

A pardon, by its very definition, is for someone who has been proven guilty. And Clinton pardoned more criminals than any president in the past. Where was the outcry then?

However, Americans do care more about a dumb cunt, and there's definitely something wrong about that, but it doesn't surprise me either.
I don't have my facts straight - but neither do you.  Libby lied to the Grand Jury and then tried to cover it up.  Yeah, I'm sure he had the courts best interest in mind and not his own....ok.  The 'opposing party' didn't push him through the justice system - the justice system did.  Calling Valarie Plame a desk worker is wrong too.

How is it that the only people jailed for this are the journalists?  Why is it ok for the Republican Party (and Bush Administration) to use Libby as a fall-guy, commute the sentence, and then complain about it?  Are these people fucking serious?

It is ashamed that he will not server any jail time.

This is coming from someone who lives in the US and has a security clearance.  Every year, I go though a re-brief in which past traitors are brought up as examples.  I think any one who break there security clearance should be punished to the fullest extent of the law (fines and prison time).  Those included should include the contactor working on a classified project to the President or Vice-President of the United States.  The bottom line is that some has determined this information to be a national secret and all of those who know about are obligated to keep it secret.  There is something called “Need to Know” which means you should only know what applies to your job.

Any politician or person tied to them should be branded as a traitor for divulging national secrets to the press or a foreign government.  This includes lying to protect someone too.

I am proud that I have a security clearance and I will never betray the trust that has been granted to me.  Too bad the politicians who we server are not trust worthy.

That is my take on the Libby issue.

Mr. Libby was sentenced to thirty months of prison, two years of probation, and a $250,000 fine. In making the sentencing decision, the district court rejected the advice of the probation office, which recommended a lesser sentence and the consideration of factors that could have led to a sentence of home confinement or probation.

I respect the jury's verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.

My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged. His wife and young children have also suffered immensely. He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect. The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting

How is it that the only people jailed for this are the journalists?  Why is it ok for the Republican Party (and Bush Administration) to use Libby as a fall-guy, commute the sentence, and then complain about it?  Are these people fucking serious?
How is it that Sandy Berger is not in jail for any crime (even though the rat was caught STEALING CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS from the national archives)?  Why is it ok for the person who actually gave up her name to not get a jail sentence when all these other people do?  Why is it ok for the two border patrol agents to still be behind bars?  Are any people in the higher levels of our government of the justice department fucking serious?
Its not ok.  Our judicial system is fucked up.
