Hey guys ive just signed up to the site, but i have been reading it in a creepy stalker-esq kind of way for..well id say 7 or so months. Most of you seem rather handy with the tech stuff so ill jump straight to the questions.

1.) Will increasing the amount of ram help with lag/load times in 2142? (my ping is commonly around 40>)
2.) Can i mix a 512mb stick with a 128 mb stick? (by which i mean have them in the same comp...or do they all have to be of the same size)
3.) What type of RAM do i really need?-becuase i know there are multiple types.

system specs: (and the comp is 5 years old...cut me some slack im a poor college kid)

Right, so theres what i think you'll be in need of to give me any help at all. If not just let me know and ill post anything i was ignorant enough to forget. So go easy on me, i know the things a dinosaur...but if anybodys willing to put in money to the "help a poor guy buy a computer fund". oh i guess i forgot to mention my price range...nothing above 400$ id say, Canadian dollars.

Yes, RAM will increase performance, but with those specs, I can't see it doing much. Since even a good computer that can play all current games doesn't cost much, I'd recommend getting about $800 and buying some new parts when you can (maybe save for a couple of months, you'd save a LOT of money once new Intels and new parts are released). I just got the computer in my signature for about $1,200..

Also, RAM can be mixed as far as I know when it comes to size (512mb and 1gb), however you do not want to mix brand, speeds, latencies, etc., you want them identical for the most part. However, correct me if I'm wrong on the size part.

Ya know, I don't know what it is with you people and CPU speed. You can run bf2 on a 1200 with a gig of ram and a GeForce 6200. I know because I used to play on one when I first got bf2 :-P Granted it doesn't look good but it will run. Yea, adding ram will definitely improve game play. It won't increase your ping times though. If you're dealing with RIMMs, I don't know how that works. I know with dual channel if you run them in pairs it increases performance. You can get a pretty decent system for less than $500 if you look around. Newegg and Tigerdirect are your best bet. Here is my current system:

Athlon 3400+
2 GIG PC4000 RAM
GeForce 8800GTS :-)

hmm i see, its not so much the load speed im after (although it would be a bonus) its the titan lag im looking to clear up. reason im looking for a "quick fix" is becuase i have indeed been saving up cash (as suggested by maestrium) for a new laptop, 6000$ worth if your curious. i jsut want to make this computer a little bit more bearable when it comes to the titan lag...i can play other game mode with no lag at all, but i still like the odd titan match. and yes i know your wondering "6000$ why the hell not buy it now" im waiting to see if my father will honour his promise to pay for my car repairs as a present...if not the money goes to it as priority.

but thanks for the feedback guys, grealty appreciated. and if anybody could give me an idea of what to expect and how much RAM or other things id need to add id love to hear it. remeber thou 400$ canadian

1.)Ping has to do with your internet, not necessarily with your computer specs
2.)you can mix them, but the speeds that they run at should match to, otherwise, bad things may or may not happen with your comp
3.)Depends on your motherboard

For lag, RAM won't help, but if it's your ping which is causing it, get a better modem or faster internet service (switching from wireless to wired would help too), however if your ping is fine and you are just getting low framerate, RAM will definitely help. I'd also go through and read through some tips on improving the speed of BF2(142), however I'm not sure if there is a thread concerning 2142, as I know there is a stick in the BF2 section.

I know the problem does not lie in ping or connection issues, ive never had a problem with any of that from bf2 to bf2142. my only worry is titan mode being so "laggy" i dont think its really lag, just a crappy FPS. Ill try giving my case a good dust clean out in the morning, maybe see if theres some drivers i can update. so whats the final word, is dishing out 350$ for more RAM really worth it...or am i pretty well boned for now.

Yes. It's almost certainly your RAM - 512MB is not enough to run either bf2 or 2142 completely lag free, unless you run it on all Low settings.

What game settings do you use?

All low, distance 100% and I think I have one other thing on...but mostly all low. The settings really dont bother me, and im not willing to sacrafice view distance becuase doing so puts me at a huge disadvantage. How much RAM do you guys think ill need to see any improvement...I was looking into it and i can get 1GB for a reasonable enough price, but another question rises. The difference between non-ECC RDRAM and ECC RDRAM would be? and how do i know which i need? (ill be cracking my case open shortly if i need to check what i have now). oh what im looking at is PC800-40ns RAM, and im 100% sure its what i have now...minus the non-ECC or ECC thing.

and thanks again guys...im not great with this computer stuff (if u couldnt get that at first)

Because RAM is getting much cheaper these days, I'd recommend buying 2GB of RAM which matches your motherboard. At most, it should cost $131 (Corsair DDR2 800), but depending on brand, you can get it down to $70. If you don't want to spend that much since you are thinking about upgrading in the next couple of months or however long, I'd say get 1GB.

I recommend that you don't do this. Your system specs are.. pretty poor! 2GB of RAM would be a serious overkill to your system.

That sounds right.

It's definitely RDRAM you want - you can tell from what you've posted by the RIMMs.

ECC is Error Checking Code - sometimes makes stuff a bit slow. You probably don't have that - but I'd try to find out properly, because probably is not a good basis to be buying components on.

RDRAM is pretty expensive if I remember right, haven't seen any around for ages.

Ignore most of what most people have said in this thread (except Scorpion (*edit* and max and kyle), who is talking sense).
More RAM and a new GPU would help a lot, but upgrading that system might not be worth doing.

I think that board runs RDram. Your gonna have a hard time finding new sticks of that. Please double check with CPU-z

Thanks for clearing up the ECC thing, and your right I just checked and I do not have it. I know it seems rather pointless to be trying to improve such an old system, but i think im just going to leave it at my parents house so when I come for visits and such I at least have a computer that works. Threy have an old Compaq...and ill have non of that. And as bertster7 said...it is hard to find what im after and the best i could get was 1GB for 324$... now that i think about it maybe the whole venture is a lost cause...ill jsut be forced to suffer for the next couple of months I suppose. oh and if your wondering where my price came from...a comp parts store here in toronto, and even for that price i traded my soul.
