I own a Creative Audigy 4 sound card, along with an Icemat Sibera headset. On XP, with a few EAX tweaks everything sounded great. In games I could hear a terrorist reloading on the other side of a Slayer concert. everything was fine.

Then came Vista. I had heard that Creative had released new drivers for their Audigy series to make em work on said OS. and sure enough, if you go to creative's site and look around, you can find the software that supposedly gives you incredible sound quality.
So, a few hours later Vista's installed and most things are up and running. I install the audigy drivers, and restart my PC. things seemed OK: Vista made its little sound when it started. I played some music to see if everything was alright. It wasn't: the sound was horrible, and there was almost no bass. Although I had tweaked it on XP for better sound quality, it was nothing even close to this without them. Even my old onboard sounded better.

And just to top that off, you can't actually tweak it, at all. Every single extra feature I've payed for doesn't work: bass and treble can't be adjusted, there is no equalizer, no presets, not a single thing to change.

Its been over 8 months since Vista has been released, and Creative have barely put any effort into getting their entire pre-x-fi line of sound cards working properly. They've made some half-assed promises to get things working, but only people with x-fi sound cards have received some dodgy new drivers that supposedly fix things up. I'm now stuck with crappy sound, because the one company that dominates the sound card market has decided the best course of action is to screw their clientele over.

So, fuck Creative. If anyone knows a way to get the entire audigy software suite working on Vista, please tell me how. Either that, or a sound card that's just as good but properly supports vista.

Creative and EA should be partners, they'd be great together.

You probably need ALchemy: http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy … /Home.aspx

Or if you don't want to pay for it, there's a free version a guy made by converting the X-Fi Alchemy into an Audigy and Live! version:

Needless to say, the second one will probably be more of a pain in the ass.

I got the version which you have to 'pay' for. Now I get that fucking "can't find layout.bin" error when installing it.

seriously, do the people that develop this stuff actually try it before calling it finished?

I know - it's a fucking disgrace.

Imagine if all companies charged you for what is essentially just a driver update.....

Running a PC would get damned expensive.

ok, so ALchemy basically does jack shit other than enable EAX ingame, which worked for every game I have already anyway.

Still stuck with sound as flat as the country I live in then, I guess.

Are there any new sound cards coming out anytime soon?

One of the guys I work with has got his Audigy 2 working with Vista fine. It required him having to install the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime separately. Can't remember what else he said.

Solution: Go back to XP. Vista blows so many chunks it isn't funny.

Or just try Linux.

funny that you put the blame on creative while microsoft is the company that seems to be interested in shutting down proper audio support for their customers. if microsoft had not fucked up dx10 there wouldnt be a problem with creative hardware.

Speaking of sound cards, I havent got 1 yet, but I did buy a set of X-540 5.1 speakers, trust me, theyre awesome but with my onboard sorround sound on my A8N-SLI Deluxe, the sound is far from great, switching back to Stero is still bad, but better, but the sorround sound is just horrible. Is this normal, is it normal that sorround sound soudns worse than stero sound onboard? I'm going to get an X-Fi anywayz, but was just curious.

Yeah that's probably normal since the processor is doing sound processing for multiple outputs.

A multi-speaker setup would do WAY WAY better on an X-Fi.

Thanks, I'm getting my new rig on July 22 after many many delays, but I thought It would be worth it since I;m also waiting for the Blitz Formula anyways.
