In Las Vegas -- which Thursday tied its highest-recorded temperature ever, 117 degrees Fahrenheit -- transformers overheated, causing electrical pole fires as people cranked up their air conditioners, said Scott Allison of the Clark County Fire Department. Several areas have lost power for a few hours at a time, he said.
That must have been a cool site. Barrels filled with 60 gallons of oil and electrical conduit setting ablaze and such.

Record numbers + triple digits run across Western (and most of) US

Hot, dry conditions meant trouble for firefighters. Four firefighters battling a wildfire near Santa Barbara, California, had to be treated for heat exhaustion Thursday, The Associated Press reported.
Summer is bad for Firefighters. Trust me.

Heres some tips on how to stay hydrated and walking in the extreme heat
-courtesy of the CDC

• Drink lots of fluids. If you are exercising in a hot environment, drink two to four glasses (16 to 32 ounces) of cool fluids every hour. But pass on the alcohol and sugary refreshments.
• You lose important salt and minerals during heavy sweating, which should be restored. Sports beverages can replace your salt and minerals.
• Opt for lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting attire. Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going out.
• Limit outdoor activity to the morning and evening hours. Stay in an air-conditioned place if possible.
• Certain people are at high risk during heat waves, such children up to 4 years of age and adults 65 or older. Children should not be left in cars unattended.

And most importantly, for the love of God/Allah/Buddha/Science DON'T START ANY WILDFIRES TODAY!. Its already going to be hell where we're going to be cutting firelines, and I don't need pesky humans to make more work for myself.

That is all.

Why not just drop water or foam bombs on wildfires?

We're having the opposite. Flooding and shit up north, overcast and miserable rain down south. Perfect English weather. Although i'll admit it is usually better than this.

In my area at least, 90% of our water and retardant (not foam) planes are being serviced. The rest are stationed up in Oxnard. Plus they wont fly down to help unless its over 50 acres

I take it you are a firefighter of some sort?  My friend works for the Forestry Service and earlier this summer he got sent to Georgia(?) for 2 weeks to fight some big fires.  It seems like it'd be a pretty satisfying job, though my girlfriend probably wouldn't be happy if I did it.

Here in Texas we've had record amounts of rainfall this year. Usually by now it's right around 100 degrees, but it's been rainy and mid-80s for weeks now. The lakes and rivers are all overflowing.

Forestry Service guys (CDF in my area) are badasses. They get dropped into the burn zone, and they spend 15 hours a day cutting fireline to combat 100 foot tall flames. And they do it all with shovels and chainsaws

here has been 30C for the last week and thats pretty hot up here. Of course we don't have any air-conditioners (I am soon getting one if it stays too hot) here because it can get under -25C in winter. Last week was horrible cause I had 28C in my room and there were difficult to sleep cause it was too hot. Luckily it has cooled down because there is a low pressure coming from the south.
