I'm not a feminist but i wonder why the NOW (national organization of women) aren't beating their chests, burning flags for some countries' treatment of women.  Why do you think groups that purport to defend women's rights in the US aren't giving ANY press time to such things that go on in the rest of the world?

my guess is that here in the US, they can get away with such talk without losing their heads.

your thoughts?

PS:  on a side note, why do these families have so many kids?

HYDERABAD, India —  A newborn baby girl was buried alive by her family in southern India on Thursday but was rescued when a farmer saw the baby's hand sticking out of the ground, officials said.

The two-day old baby, who had apparently never been fed, was recovering in a hospital in the Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, said Charu Sinha, district superintendent of police.

Indian society has long favored boys, who do not require the enormous dowry payments that bankrupt many poor families when their daughters marry.

The baby was buried by her maternal grandfather, Abdul Raheem, and his brother, Abdul Rasheed, with the consent of the baby's mother, Mehrunnisa, near Otkur village, about 150 kilometers south of the state capital of Hyderabad, Sinha said.

The police arrested the two men and will charge them with attempted murder, Sinha added. Mehrunnisa, who only goes by one name, will be charged as an accomplice. Her husband, Abdul Ghani, had gone to the neighboring state of Maharashtra in search of work.

Raheem has seven daughters and "he feared that he will not be able to bear the burden of the eight females in the family," said Sinha.

The baby was rescued when a farmer, Ram Kumar, saw her hand while he was driving to his fields on a tractor. Kumar and other villagers rushed the baby to a nearby hospital. The unnamed baby weighs only 1.7 kilograms and is expected to be taken to Hyderabad on Friday.

no, i'm male.  however i feel strongly about equal opportunity for all based on ability. i think it's a shame that women are treated like walking vaginas in some cultures and aren't allowed to do simple things like drive a car in others.

and...i find it interestng that NOW continually bash men in the US yet don't pay any press time to oppression of women in the middle east and this kind of dowry issue in India.  I sense double standard and wanted to know why this is the case.

They clearly did a shitty job of burying her. Seriously, what a half-assed job. That, or they thought it'd be funny to replicate a zombie movie.

If they are poor they will be fucked when it comes to marry their daughters away since they pay the dudes family, and since there is no other male in the family to help pay for the dowry (is that the correct word)

anyway that does not make it right to do such a thing to a baby, and to why they have so many kids condoms are expensive there

I hear where you are coming from. I even went to their website just now to see if I could catch the double standard. Their mission statement say to change "a bunch of stuff" in our society. By that I guess we assume the United States.

Again, National organization for Women.

maybe poor people should understand where babies come from and have some self control.  after all, they are bringing another life into the world.  guy or girl, how will they feed it if they are so poor?  how will they care for it when it gets sick?

part of the problem in iraq and these other countries is the fact that they have 973490374907834 kids running around.  are there enough jobs to sustain that growth rate?

I reckon they should put the one child policy like in China, although that would actually lead to more killings if there are "accidental" second childs. Coming to think of it, the one child policy worked but was horrible...

for sure they probably don't have good sex-ed in these countries.  Also, they are so male dominated that what the man wants the man gets alot of times.  women are used for reproduction and cooking/cleaning.

...future suicide bombers?  that's an interesting thought.  I'm sure Al Qaeda sees them as raw material.

i've heard reports and seen vids of iraqi kids running about like street urchins.  these kids are very impressionable at that age and all it takes is a Fagin (think Oliver Twist) or AbuDerkaDerkaDerka to encourage them to a life of crime.  by crime of course it's a broader term than insurgency.  Where are the parental responsibilities here?  why are these kids not at home or in school or both?

I think you may have the wrong forum here since bf2s is filled with mostly young males. Maybe you should post this on a feminist forum. But i agree with you on the equality issue though. You have a strong point when you claim that there is a slight double standard. Women FTW!!!!

VERY good points....  This is why I think true liberals can't support much of what the Islamic World stands for.  Imperialistic Capitalism from the West is bad enough in its own right, but the way that much of the Islamic World treats women is equally despicable.

I'm all for religious freedom and staying out of the affairs of other countries when it doesn't really concern us, but despite my tolerance of other cultures, my tolerance ends where abuse and sexism begin.  There's only so much you can tolerate when it comes to certain Islamic practices.  Eventually, you have to reject the overt male chauvinism of much of the Islamic World.

True liberals still have to stand up for racial and gender equality, regardless of what any religion or culture believes in.

Whilst the person who did this was a Muslim (judging by the name), i don't think this is something that can be attributed to them. This happens in China and many other countries too, Other faiths are also known do similar things in India.

Very true - this is a non-faith specific thing.  more of a cultural thing i guess.

I'd say that requiring women to wear a full-body veil is pretty sexist.  While I realize that many Muslims no longer adhere to this practice, enough of them do that it is an issue.

I agree, it's weird. Women's groups should be trying to burn down the Saudi Arabian embassy every day. Women aren't allowed to drive? Their testimony in court is weighted less than a man's (so it's easy to get away with rape)? It's un-fucking-believable. There would be riots if they tried to enact laws like that here. There was a huge amount of activism against South African discrimination against blacks, but almost no public outcry over discrimination against women in dozens of countries (even ones without oil). My view is that sexism is too ingrained in our society to allow us to get as angry about discrimination against women as we do about racial discrimination.
