It's not fake, each different type of amino acid has its own name, thats all of those names for this particular protein.

You editted that after I posted that same word! Cheater.
I actually misspelled it and corrected it on my own (put a k in coniosis instead of a c), but whatever helps you sleep at night...

I dunno if this has been mentioned, since I didn't read the thread, since I'm a raging douchenozzle, but that's not a real word. At least not technically. It was disregarded because it was a scientific term.

Last time I checked, the longest word (besides chemicals) was "Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovalcanicarniosis", which is a disease contracted by breathing in volcanic ash.

It’s the scientific name for Tryptophan synthetase, which is a protein containing 267 amino acids. It contains 1,846 letters. Take that, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Ok. This may be real, but it has to be some kind of joke by a scientist who named it!
No body could create a real name like that without realizing how rediculous it is.

It's because it's a 'constructed' technical term, which can be arbitrarily long.

Personally, I think for it to count as the 'longest word in the English language' it a) has to be un-constructed (otherwise, the longest possible word has infinite length) and b) has to appear in a recognised dictionary (such as the Oxford English Dictionary).
=Robin-Hood=

If this counts as an English word than it definitely isn't the longest. Simply because it is a concatenation of all the amino acids comprising this protein.

Pick any protein that is longer and you'll have a longer word (e.g. titin, 26926 amino acids; the longest I know, but I don't dare to say it is the biggest out there).

Better yet take a human DNA strand and do not abbreviate the nucleotides:

Deoxyadenosinedeoxyguanosinedeoxythymidinedeoxycytidine... * approximately 1 billion; In short human DNA (this can easily be topped with DNA of other species that have over a 100 billion nucleotides)

Cheers,
R
