Missouri abortion clinics will face new regulations and new restrictions on teaching sex education classes.

Gov. Matt Blunt signed legislation Friday placing more abortion clinics under government oversight by classifying them as ambulatory surgical centers. Planned Parenthood claimed the law, HB 1055, could force it to spend up to $2 million to remodel one of its clinics and halt medical abortions at another site.

The new law, which will take effect Aug. 28, also bars people affiliated with abortion providers from teaching or supplying materials for sex education courses in public schools, and it allows schools to offer abstinence-only programs.

Blunt proclaimed the law “one of the strongest pieces of pro-life legislation in Missouri history” as he spoke from a cross-shaped lectern during a signing ceremony in the sanctuary of Concord Baptist Church.
The legislation itself is just standard boilerplate at this point, as is the whole pro-life/anti-choice rhetoric, but signing it into law in a church? Usually these people are bright enough to do this shit outside of the confines of a religious building, but I guess this is Missouri we're talking about...no offense to the fine people in Kansas City or STL, but the rest of the state is as bass-ackward as any place I've been in Louisiana (excepting Acadiana and the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area), Mississippi (excepting Pass Christian, Gulfport, Biloxi, Waveland, Bay St. Louis, D'Iberville and Pascagoula, all of which are near and dear to my heart)  or Alabama (the whole state's a shithole).
