Developed for the conceptual stages of design, Google SketchUp is a powerful yet easy-to-learn 3D software tool that combines a simple, yet robust tool-set with an intelligent drawing system that streamlines and simplifies 3D design. From simple to complex, conceptual to realistic, Google SketchUp enables you to build and modify 3D models quickly and easily. If you use Google Earth, Google SketchUp allows you to place your models using real-world coordinates and share them with the world using the Google 3D Warehouse.
Holy Shit.

This is amazing. Google SketchUp is such a great 3D modeling program, Ive already used hours just messing around in it.

I cant even describe it, but I will say that if you have ever used AutoCAD or similar, I would definitally recommend that you have a go at this. While the free version is great, the Professional Retail version is even better for people actually using CAD software, because you can export your drawings to the .dwg format.

And these other features are sounding pretty cool as well, modelling houses to go into google earth is a step in the direction of a total 3D earth map.

Absolute Rape.

It's a decent program, but it doesn't compare to ProEngineer, AutoCad, or Solid Works, all of which I've used, some more than others. It does basic sketches quite well. The one thing that I can't stand about Sketchup is that you can change a dimension fine, but you can't change the length. Which means you're basically circumventing the problem and allowing for proportion errors. (Unless I'm completely missing the button/option that would allow you to actually change the length.)

But for being a free CAD program, you can't beat it's user-friendliness.

Threw together a model of 2 of my downstairs rooms in about 1:30mins
totally to scale. This software rules. I tried doing it in 3DStudio Max a few months ago, but gave up because it was so fiddly.

Be a while before I've done the whole house tho.
