it's in a littlewoods cataloge, i told her not to buy from there lol

but this is one she thought of getting (even though she knows nothing about computers)

Intel Pentium E2140 Duel Core processor (i don't know how good this is)
1gb ram
160gb HD
15" LCD Flat panel monitor with 8 ms response rate (i'm not sure what the response rate means)
18x DVD +/- RW DoubleLayer
Vista Capable DirectX  9 graphics
Vista Home Priemium

now the price they say is £500
(now i'm not to computer smart but because it out of a cataloge i would espect it to be over priced)

just wanted to know what you tech people thought

It's not very good. You could probably do a fair bit better.

Build your own machine (the tech section holds in a nice amount of info, and tech-geeks) and get vista for *cough* minimized prices *cough*

That way you can get a better machine for a smaller fee.

And, in thet one machine the bottlenecks seem to be the fact that it only has 1gb RAM and nameless graphic card. The monitor should also be at least 17", preferrably 19". 15" is utterly small.

To save £250 on that, get it with WinXP Pretty descent, but you can get better for that money. Or go second-hand. You can get pretty descent second-hand computers.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Well from my understanding, Pentium DC E2140/E2160 is in fact an "underclocked" C2D. It runs at 1.4 still, but its only FSB800 (same as all current Pentiums), and only 1MB Cache (same as all current Pentiums). Its better than Pentium D, not quite as good as C2D.

The computer's not bad. Not sure on exchange rates to gauge if its a good price though.

Well, not a bad setup for uni, but it might be a bit pricey. Have a look around and especially after the Intel price drops, she might be able to pick up a core 2 duo for cheaper!
