BAGHDAD — Although Bush administration officials have frequently lashed out at Syria and Iran, accusing it of helping insurgents and militias here, the largest number of foreign fighters and suicide bombers in Iraq come from a third neighbor, Saudi Arabia, according to a senior U.S. military officer and Iraqi lawmakers.

About 45% of all foreign militants targeting U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia; 15% are from Syria and Lebanon; and 10% are from North Africa, according to official U.S. military figures made available to The Times by the senior officer. Nearly half of the 135 foreigners in U.S. detention facilities in Iraq are Saudis, he said.

Fighters from Saudi Arabia are thought to have carried out more suicide bombings than those of any other nationality, said the senior U.S. officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the subject's sensitivity. It is apparently the first time a U.S. official has given such a breakdown on the role played by Saudi nationals in Iraq's Sunni Arab insurgency.

He said 50% of all Saudi fighters in Iraq come here as suicide bombers. In the last six months, such bombings have killed or injured 4,000 Iraqis.

The situation has left the U.S. military in the awkward position of battling an enemy whose top source of foreign fighters is a key ally that at best has not been able to prevent its citizens from undertaking bloody attacks in Iraq, and at worst shares complicity in sending extremists to commit attacks against U.S. forces, Iraqi civilians and the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

The problem casts a spotlight on the tangled web of alliances and enmities that underlie the political relations between Muslim nations and the U.S.

Wait Saudi from Saudi Arabia?  The US ally?  The same guys who helped with the planes into the twin towers?  No way.  There must be a mistake.  Those guys are good people.  The bad guys are Syria and Iran.

U.S. officials remain sensitive about the relationship. Asked why U.S. officials in Iraq had not publicly criticized Saudi Arabia the way they had Iran or Syria, the senior military officer said, "Ask the State Department. This is a political juggernaut."

Unsurprising. Even less surprising that Iran has been copping all the flak while Saudi 'Twin Towers' Arabia has been getting off scot-free.

Actually the bulk of the Islamic states in the middle east are the 'bad guys'.  unfortunately until we can make a tank that runs on compressed air or solar power, we need to make deals with the devil so we can fuel the war that will defeat islamic fascism.  it's part of a larger campaign, so it will take a lot longer than previous wars especially with the lack of support from most of the world.

that is, unless you think we should just give up and start reading the koran.  that would bring peace now wouldn't it?  NOT!

But its not the Saudi government, it simply very rich crazy people who happen to be from Saudi Arabi!

You cant honestly say that the Saudi government is sponsoring terrorism, there's been several attacks within Saudi Arabia in the last few years.
Unless there just trying to throw us off.... thank god they didnt fool you guys

Hang on a minute....

You're not suggesting that any terrorists come from Saudi Arabia are you? That can't be true, they love the US and their fair and just democratic Saudi government. This must all be liberal propaganda. There's no way that the Saudis are responsible for the bulk of major terror attacks. Of course there's no way that America would treat them any differently because they invest heavily in the US, spend loads on Western arms (mostly UK/US) and are sitting on the biggest supply of oil anywhere in the world.....

Could you imagine the repercussions around the world if the US invaded Saudi Arabia? First there's the Oil, secondly, could you imagine what the reaction would be of US Troops in Mecca?

Saudi Arabia will never be pressurised by the US, it's far easier to blow up Iraq and Iran. However, the Saudi and Pakistani governments seem to be doing something to combat the extremists. Albeit not enough. Then again, so did Saddam manage to keep terrorists out of Iraq...

Seriously though, if you want to get rid of a wasps nest you don't pour sugar over yourself & stand 500yards away from the nest to attract the wasps and kill them individually while getting stung, you smoke the fucking nest, go in, and burn it out!  Why did the American administration constantly say "9/11, Saddam hussein, Iraq, WMD!!"  when all roads lead to Saudi Arabia from 9/11 to the insurgency in Iraq?

Do you not get it?  We went FIRST into Afghanistan yes?  They were from Saudi right?  Did they participate in training camps in Saudi or Afghanistan?

Back in 2002/2003 it would have been more fruitful to deal with the root cause of islamic extermism which found within Whabism.  That would mean telling your saudi pals to move over as you clearly need help.

So why do even need to invade? This is not the middle ages.

And anyway invasion of Saudi would not go well with the muslim world.  Touch Mecca and WW3 will prob errupt.......and this time it isn't those crazy europeans.

Precisely my point (edit - not the "invade saudi" part, but the why invade without considering the impact part).  No one is under the impression that Saudi is not a muslim country.  No one is under the impression that by invaded a muslim country would not cause other individuals from other muslim countries to participate.

So on one hand, we aren't supposed to lump muslims into a general "all muslims are bad category", yet this thread seems to support action against all muslims?

I think you're oversimplifying quite a bit.

I think it's you that is clearly confused.

They develop their extermism in Saudi THEN travelled to Afghanistan for training.

Nip the brain washing in the bud in Saudi....no more desire to train as Jihadi fighters.

Not really, I agree with m3thod - however your course of action has in fact pretty much inflamed the whole Muslim world,  but I suppose this way is more profitable? rather than, say, crippling Saudi Arabia much like the 10 years the Iraqis endured before the current slaughter inflicted on them in the invasion. I guess you need that old Saudi oil just enough to tollerate an attack on US soil and the continued daily slaughter of your countrymen while trying to pick a fight with the rest of the Muslim world, Shit maybe yis should of had the balls & just leveled Mecca and said "CoooEeee We're here!!"

More like travel to Pakistan and get brainwashed and trained, why bother globetrotting when it's all on one mountain!

I got that from a Pakistani tourist brochure through the mail. Very competitive, all sorts of slander against Saudi and Afghan Jihad facilities.
