My CPU runs HOT

Just checked Everest to see my CPU temperature, which was a whopping 76 °C

Normally it idles around the 60s.

I'm not even overclocked.

What kind of fan should I get to cool it off?

This is a double clip style fan btw and it is a socket 478

I'm using the aluminum HSF that came with the computer even though I upgraded to a 2.2GHz from a 1.6GHz

76 F? sounds normal to me...
but if anything, just clean all the dust in your computer and CPU fan, thats what I did and my CPU temp went down by 10.

I asked a few tech guys at my local PC store and they said for C2D (assuming you have one) that idling at 60 C is fine, but anything above 65C-75C is a bit too hot. He says you shouldn't worry about it unless your computer is acting all wonky.

Nope, I don't have a C2D. I'm the only person on this forum that still has a P4. A 2.2GHz P4.

I believe that may the be the reason of it being too hot.
Just take your pc outside and blow it out with air or something.

OMG I went to 81 C just by playing Half-Life 1 for about an hour.

Btw, this made the game lag.

I think I have discovered the problem behind all my lag. This damn CPU heat.

The best way to clean your pc is to:

1.) Take it outside
2.) Spray it with the hose
3.) Let it sit out in the summer sun for a couple hours to dry.

J/K.

Spray that beast out with some compressed air. It's not hard to do, and it takes like 3 min.

That's what leads me to believe the problem is more than dust, it's shitty aluminum for a heatsink and a pretty old and crappy fan from 2K3 or something.

Try to get the spots that might be covered in wires, usually theres a bit of dust there.

Metal doesn't melt at 100C.

Don't be silly, it'll just get hot again. To really keep your CPU cool, put your computer into a bucket of ice water while you're gaming. Preferably when you're playing against me.

dude if you've never cleaned out your computer then do it now! i make an effort to clean my laptop and gaming rig every other month or so. that way you don't pull hairballs out of your cpu fan! seriously, 5 years of dust and particles add up. You got pets? is your cpu fan even running? its probably got a hair ball right in there holding things up. clean off your video cards fan/heatsink too. let us know what you find!

They lied to you.

For a C2D 60C is ok as an absolute maximum under prolonged load. Idling at 60C could get you load temps of upto about 80C, which is seriously bad for the CPU. Running it at 60C-70C is fine for short periods (benchmarking etc), but doing it for a prolonged period, you will seriously damage your CPU - you'd be very lucky if it lasted more than 4 or 5 months.
