Ok, I started this thread, because I don't want to derail other threads where Bubs say China owns Taiwan blah blah blah. Prove it.

I don't see how China controls Taiwan, we have our own government, we have our own military, a seperate economy, seperate EVERYTHING. The only thing similar is the culture.

China only dominates Taiwan politically due to it's economic power. If Taiwan is a province of China, why would they threaten to attack their OWN PROVINCE.

Btw, China doesn't have enough row boats to prepare an invasion.

You are recognised as a part of China, therefore you are.  That's how countries work.  That's why Palestine isn't a country.  That's why Somalia wasn't (still isn't?) a country.

China's threats to attack Taiwan (in it's view) is telling Taiwan not to secede.  It's basically putting down a rebel insurgency.

Puting down an Insurgency which is across a straight? China hasn't even stepped foot into this country, the day they will, is the day they die. Better dead than Red.

I dislike the Chinese expansionist mentality. Just look at Tibet.

As I see it, Taiwan works like Hong Kong.  Both are part of China, but they are economically independent.  China is clever and knows that these two places work great the way they are now.  China tasted capitalism and it liked it, so they won't touch Taiwan.

If you've ever been to China you'll know thayt there's absolutely no way these people don't like capitalism. I was pleasently surprised that China has allowed Hong Kong to remain largely independent of China. I guess they appreciate the large stacks of money the place is generating.

Hong Kong counts?  Anyway, if you look at Shanghai, it seems a futuristic city.  China is taking the lead, there's no question about that.

No doubt about that, but 90% of the country is a shit hole.

On average, yes. At least I don't get lung cancer from air pollution in cities like Beijing and theres no coal mines fucking exploding and no polluted waters.

Taiwan is not a part of China. India is not a part of Great Britain. Taiwan has a seperate everything, including military. The day the PLA goes across that strait is the day the PLA dies.

I'd say Taiwan is safe.  China needs someone to make the little chips and things that go inside the McDonald toys that make them say funny things.

He's Australian actually.

To Ruckel:

PLA is no doubt advancing and is becoming a threat, and our leaders still want to cut our already low military budget...

What do you (we, I'm Taiwanese) have again? Like, 30 Hueys, 30 Cobras, French and funnily named indigenous jets, and some old M14s?

I wish we have M14s... All we got is some old arty pieces, old M16's and home made 6k2 (I don't even fucking know what that is). We got couple of Cruisers and frigates. But we got excellent F16 pilots. The only people who will defend this country are the Aborigines, most of the city people run after hearing a gun shot even in Training... I heard our NCO's get pretty good pay compared to the rest of the country

You got the USA on your side. Which also means the UK. Which is good enough. Throw in India (don't think they like China much) if China think they can do it in numbers.

You people don't seem to understand how statehood works.  Taiwan is a part of China because it is recognised as a part of China.  Just the same as Alaska is a part of the US because it is recognised as being a part of the US.  Taiwan is represented on the UN by China.  Just the same as Palestine isn't a state because it isn't recognised as such.

You don't like Taiwan's current position?  Complain to Europe and the US (also Russia, Australia et al).

Taiwan is a very very very different situation from Palistine. The Chinese have never ever crossed the straight. I don't even see why Taiwan is part of China... Just because during the Revolution one party went on an Island doesn't mean the entire country is part of another.

Yes but Taiwan was also ruled by the Japanese at one point, so is it part of Japan as well>

No, because it isn't recognised as part of Japan.

Are you reading what I write, or just picking the bits you like?

Yes... What is your point? Different politcal groups... KMT and Communists. The KMT fled to Taiwan, and set up another nation. If Taiwan was to belong to another country, it would be Japan since they were the only ones who actually colinized this country.
