I'm helping a mate choose a laptop, his maximum price is £650. ATM he's looking at a Inspiron 1501 (dell) - http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produ … ;~lt=popup

Is this suitable for low level gaming, multimedia  (porn) and general student work? And is it worth the price?

Post up any alternatives, but DON'T exceed the price range.

(leetkyle, get on this asap )

Cheers, Ted13#

-edit, must be a UK based company.

What i am thinking of doing:

Buying a Small Business Dell Vostro, using my Dads business to get around the whole personal / professional use thingy.

That way for £639 i get this:

If looking at Dell check out the outlet.  I got an Inspiron e1505 with the best CPU, x1300 vid card and 2 gig ram for $850us.  If i built the same computer it would have been almost $2000us.

Look into Asus, they ship worldwide with very good laptops at relatively cheap prices.

Check out the Dell 1520. Buy the cheapest option, the only thing I bumped up was the Processor to the T7100 (1.8Ghz) which should be enough for your friend. It comes stock with the 8400m GS which is, quite average but will be sufficient for light, casual gaming. For £646.00. If there are any Dell Coupons available in the UK, use them to reduce the price down after getting better options on the notebook.

Or look at the list of laptops here. (The £645 one looks OK the GPU is underpowered compared to the 8400GS, but I'm pretty sure it'll haev somewhat better build quality than the Dell. Although it is a budget line notebook, Asus is known for making solid notebooks.)

HP - The dv6000t has got some solid parts and it's around $1000, so I think that fits in to your budget.

Lastly, just check out this forum. Click on the "What notebook should I buy" and fill out the FAQ and you'll get some suggestions of what to get.

try that one!
That would be £1100 8-)

Stock is £30 over, stay in one weekend, and, it would give him the ability to upgrade specs as time goes by

To be honest, I really don't like the new Inspirons, look too fat. But they are good value.

Yeh Dell seem to do surprising well at laptops (better then their desktops).

Remember, ALWAYS GET THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF RAM YOU CAN AND THEN ADD EXTRA YOURSELF POST-PURCHASE = Save mucho $$$

Just search around the HP site. I think they discontinued the DV6000 (which is a brilliant laptop) - but there might be a few bargains on eBay

I know for a fact that Acer has almost no profit in laptops, so they might have better for cheaper - but then neither does Dell, and they offer great service...
I'd recommend looking into Acer, and if you don't find anything there, dell.
