Seriously, I don't think I've laughed this hard in awhile. I'm glad we are providing "hands on" education.

Nigerian schoolchildren browse porn on donated laptops

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported Thursday.

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children's laptops.

"Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials," NAN said.

A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.

Seems like a waste anyways.

But a study in March by the U.S. Department of Education found no demonstrable link between educational software and higher test scores, putting laptop advocates on the defensive. A stream of news articles focused on school districts in New York and Florida that dumped laptop programs, citing high costs, misuse by students and the unfavorable results raised in the federal study.
And so why are we paying for these?

Interesting. They didn't think about putting on Internet filters beforehand?  I'd assume that would be high on their priorities.

I can see the point in giving out laptops (access to technology); but I honestly don't know how that's going to help them. Is it supposed to aid modernization of underdeveloped nations?

Software licensing for a filer would just make the laptops more expensive.

That's true, but I'd still think that they would have known that these laptops might be exploited, if not by accident. I mean, there are sketchy advertisements pretty much everywhere on the net, misspelling a link might also result in the same thing.

A little masturbation can go a long ways towards the prevention of AIDS, I guess. Perhaps that's the master plan...

Nigeria is neither New York nor Florida. Pretty much all of the kids in that study had access to a computer of some sort, and definitely an adequate school library. Of course issuing laptops to students with access to desktops and libraries isn't going to result in higher test scores. Giving a laptop with a Wikipedia distribution and perhaps Internet access to a Nigerian kid who doesn't otherwise have access to that information, and probably has a school library that leaves a bit to be desired, is a COMPLETELY different thing.

I would like aid to be devoted to more than speculation. The object here is to develop basic education within an allied nation.

It's Nigeria...  Look at their birth rate.  I'd assume looking at porn is just readying them for "early parenthood", if you know what I mean.

As I've said before, foreign aid is for charity.  American tax money should help OUR poor, not theirs.

There's absolutely no speculation involved. When you make a great deal of information available to a student, that student has every opportunity to do better. That's not speculation, that's logical necessity.

I'd hate to use a tired cliché, but "Give a man a fish.." springs to mind. These projects are working alongside other very successful African Internet projects that bring Internet connections to remote rural regions, letting farmers participate in distance learning, and giving them advice on how to get better yields from their crops. Drugs and food are all well and good, but what good are drugs and food really if all they're doing is sustaining something that would be unsustainable on its own?
