This time it isn't WoW, it is Star Wars: Galaxies.

Some guy who duplicated gold in Star Wars: Galaxies generated $700,000 REAL WORLD DOLLARS and bought a house!

A third guy found a bug in "Star Wars Galaxies" that allowed him to duplicate items, and using IGE as a middle man, he managed to generate $700,000. He bought a house with the money. A real world house. His doorbell plays the imperial march from Star Wars when you ring it.
Holy fucking rofl.

edit: missed the closing brackets, how embarrasing

Good on him for that. The thing is he didn't rip off anyone, he just sold a 'product' which he managed to get by exploitation of a software bug. Amazing that he amounted $700,000, that muct mean there's shitloads of people out there willing to pay for computer game gold.

Virtual items and characters in these games can be traded for real money on middle markets like IGE, a company based in Asia. Last year total spending was estimated to be between 250 and 400 million dollars.
300 million on virtual gold/items!

I suddenly got an urge to sell cheap WoW crap to nerds and turn a profit off of them after they steal the money from their mom's purse.

Considering most players stopped playing Galaxies 2 years ago, it's pretty impressive he sold that much stuff.

I shit you not, a buddy of mine, very successful CEO of a large (800 employees) company, pays out the yang for his kids to have gold in World of Warcraft.

If they make good grades, he buys them 1,000 gold.  Costs him something like $100. If they do a bang up job around the house on the yard or something, he buys them 1,000 gold. It's absolutely ridiculous.

He must have spent a grand in real life money this summer on fake gold on the internet. Crazy.
