Congressman Ron Paul

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Paul#Iraq

Coming from a Democrat, I think Ron Paul is one of the best candidates running for president.  He may be against some things we lefties support, such as universal health care, right to have an abortion, etc, but on the other hand he supports many things we lefties hold dearly, such as right to life (INCLUDING prisoners on death row, I mean), isolationism, and other things which quite frankly make him look like a liberal commie.

Right now, the country needs more people like Ron Paul running for office.  He's a Republican, no doubt, but he's not a hypocrite, which is something every American who votes should take note of.  He has very conservative values, while at the same time having some extremely liberal ones. If by some miracle Paul gets the Republican nomination, my vote would go to him before the big-time democrats.

So, what do you think?  Too moderate for you neo-cons out there?  Too conservative for you liberals?  Explain why you would love, or hate, to see Ron Paul leading the United States.

I actually wouldn't say he's against abortion, he's very much a Constitutionalist.  And there really is nothing in the constitution that would allow (or on the flip side, outlaw) abortion.  If I remember correctly, he's of the mindset, that Abortion is a state issue, not a federal issue, and that if the people want it as a Federal issue, they need to get an amendment passed.

If he did win, and became president, he would be the highest educated president in US history, he is a Doctor after all.

Not from the USA.

Would support him. Wish he'd run under an independent banner as he's the only true "Republican" left as far as I can tell, seeing as the rest of the political spectrum in the USA has deviated so much over the past 50 years...

If Ron Paul doesn't win, our country is doomed. If he does win, our doom is at least put off for a while, just so long as Congress will support his ideas.

He's not really in the closet at all, he is a libertarian, but as any 3rd party candidate knows you won't be allowed to enter the presidential debates unless your a member of our two party system.  Democracy.

Agreed...  Ron Paul would be excellent as president, but he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell at winning.  If he did win, he'd probably get assassinated anyway.

I may vote for him as a write-in candidate.  Either him or maybe Nader.

No kidding...  But again, it's not like we expected him to.  Voting for 3rd parties is about principle, not electability.

I just wish we had Instant Runoff Voting -- that's TRUE democracy.

If mainstream media would give him any attention he'd have the presidency easily, but mainstream pretty much ignores him.  If you talk to anyone who's not on the internet, they don't know who Ron Paul is.  But when you get on just about any internet based poll, Ron Paul is the winner.

I'd always heard the mainstream media was biased, and I always thought it was a little bit, but the way they completely ignore Ron Paul (or even try to discredit him, foxnews) has made me a believer that the media is nothing but a shill to the politicians.

Well, he does get decent press on certain channels.  Ron Paul has been on both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.  He was also on Real Time with Bill Maher and even The O'Reilly Factor (if I'm not mistaken).

I really don't think he'd win the general election though.  Many people agree with his principles, but as Paul once said, "The people have been led to believe that they need the government to help them through life."  That's not exactly how he put it, but he meant the same thing.

I personally disagree with a lot of his economic stances, but we're nearly identical on social and foreign policy.

You may be surprised.. Its still early in the campaign and his amount of follower is growing very fast.  The media doesnt even talk about him and hes getting more and more popular.  he will get more name recognition after the Iowa straw poll since he will probably finish second after Romney (giuliani and mccain wil skip the iowa straw poll)

His supporters are very passionate.. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/

I'm not even american and i read about that guy every day.

He would get my vote.  I agree with many of his stances.  I'm not a big isolationist (or a small one), but I can see his logic in it.  From what I have read, he is the candidate that I agree with the most.
