interesting idea, but in order for something to grow in a petri dish, it has to be alive, and if it is alive, it will still produce C)2 and methane, so either way, it doesn't work out.
supplying the oxygen without a heartbeat would be a tough one though
if we discovered how to grow living flesh and bone, I could see better uses than food...
