I hate to shatter your perception of the US but they WERE meddling in Afghani affairs during the cold war and helped arm and train Osama Bin Laden and his cronies, who would then have been the incumbent Taliban. The US also armed your old buddy Saddam Hussein before he attempted to take on Kuwait, then you invaded and knocked the shit out of Iraq until they withdrew to their original borders. That's why so many extremists view the US as a legitimate target for attacks, they are always interfering with other countries affairs ...picking sides, helping install sympathetic regimes whether it's good for the nation's people or not.
...But here's a hard fact for you, not every Muslim is an extremist and by extension not every Muslim deserves to be treated like a second class citizen in an apartheid society (Palestine/Israel), or have their homeland steamrollered (Iraq). It's very easy to sit in the comfort of your own Western superpower nation, enjoying life's luxuries while other nations around the world suffer from the consequences of your nations' foreign policies but don't be so surprised when people from these nations get incredibly pissed off and lash out (not that their actions are in any way justified).
Also, the Palestinians who blow themselves up in Israel aren't doing it primarily on religious grounds, it's a battle over land. The same mistaken assumption regarding religion was continually made about the IRA and catholicism, religion is secondary to the political aspect of the conflict.
P.S: I take it you're from Britain then, seen as you said "were we in afgan or iraq before 9/11?" and you say you're not from the US.
