Okay, so my parents have a 90-gallon fishtank in the basement that hasn't been used in about a decade. We've been thinking of cleaning up the basement and turning that fishtank into a marine (saltwater) aquarium.

Maybe not this big, but you get the idea.

Now I'm damn sure SOMEONE here has experience with saltwater aquariums, so I was looking for suggestions.

We're thinking of having an all-fish aquarium (coral's really damn hard to maintain, and expensive to buy and replace). Any suggestions for fish would be nice (especially if you can name schooling fish). Also, general tips on maintaining the balance in the tank are welcome.

EDIT: The dimensions of the tank are 48" X 24" X 18" (20 cm X 60 cm X 45 cm), and has a capacity of 90 gallons (341 L).

I dunno, but my dad had a 1000 liter marine tank, and it did have coral's and such and I from what I seem to understand, you want to have a fishtank without any coral's and such? I do not know for sure that it can be done, most fish (from what I've seen) hide behind the rocks, coral's and everything and sleep there and such and some fish actually sleep in them. And without a marine tank is gonna look horrible. And keep in mind that these things costs a fortune to maintain. You're gonna need a filter to purify all the water, with a special filter, then mix it with salt, which has to have the right amount of salt else everything will die. Then you need to buy a dozen of different filters and water flow regulators. You will have to change the water every month or so. You will also have to buy some monitoring equipment to monitor the temperature of the water. Which I believe has to be somewhere around 27 degrees Celsius And BTW, what are the dimensions? Cuz most fish require atleast a fishtank that is 125cm in length. To that, you will have to test the water on all kinds of different readings. Don't make the mistake of thinking its all just easy because its alot of work especially a salt water tank and it costs a fortune.

Even though, if I might have scared you off, the end result is all worth it though.

But my advise is, if you really want to go through with this, is get some good information on this. Find some aquarium books or ask around in aquarium stores about things that you are not sure about.

Well, of course we're gonna have rocks and the like, but just few (if any) soft coral. Soft coral, while pretty looking, is hard to maintain.

EDIT: And yes, we know it's hard to maintain. We've been keeping a small (much smaller) tank in our kitchen, and that's a bitch to maintain.

Get an engineer on the job, that wrench can maintain anything.

I've had a bunch of fresh water and a couple of marine tanks.  Marine tanks are A LOT of work, and very expensive if you make a mistake.  I would say go with a freshwater tank for African or South American Ciclids.  They're very colorful and aggressive; not quite as much as marine fish, but far less complicated to maintain.  They're fairly cheap too.  Look into them, you might be surprised.

90 gallons is small. I had a 120 gallon freshwater tank that was only about half the size of a 50" widescreen television. = small.

EDIT: The one at the top of the page is in the thousands of gallons probably.

1. Salt water tanks require a fairly serious commitment and expense. To have a healthy tank you will need to replace 1/2 of your tank water once a week and just the salt water costs about $1.50 per gallon to buy or produce.

2. Salt water fish ar way more fragile and hard to keep than fresh water and without those weekly water changes your fish and corral will die.

3. Fresh water fish tanks can be rad. Heres mine.

Actually the larger the tank the easier it is to maintain. The most important thing is to cycle a new tank.
That means cleaning it. filling it up with water and throwing in some cheap fish to establish the proper environment in the filters and such before you even attempt to bring in corral and expensive fish.
That can take 4-8 weeks.

I had a real small round tank once, with two goldfish, they both died though . One sort of nibbled the other and then it died for some reason and then the other sort of inflated and died, maybe I should have given them better names than Brat and Prat (I was young at the time).
