109th Congress
Major events
Prominent events included the filibuster "nuclear option" scare, the alleged failure of the federal government to help in Hurricane Katrina disaster relief, the Tom DeLay corruption investigation, the CIA leak scandal, the rising unpopularity of the Iraq War, the 2006 immigration reform protests and Government involvement in the Terri Schiavo case.

In addition to the DeLay indictment, this Congress also had a number of scandals: Bob Ney, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, William J. Jefferson, Mark Foley scandal, and the Jack Abramoff scandals.

Well I see everyday, the low approval ratings of Congress, but for some reason never saw any when 109th was in session. Im assuming people like hearing about the ass raping thier getting and approve.

Maybe the fact they were elected to act like an opposition to GWB, but they aren't a real one, gives them a low approval rating.

Lets break it down. We agree that everyone calls the 110th congress the Democratic Congress due to thier one vote majority (1 VOTE!). So its safe to say most Americans correlate the low approval ratings with a Democratic Congress. Its like there isn't any Republicans in the room.

Potentially, the Democratic Congress' "failures" could cause the return of a Republican Congress in two years. Then the complacency of Congress will return and the ass raping of the middle class will continue.

Now the 110th Congress has done something the 109th dare to not ever do, challenged Bush. Of course no credit is given for challenging Bush. only for bringing the troops home in my opinion. (I assume thats what the American people who voted them in want)

Then when something in the admin is investigated by the 110th Congress (Libby, Gonzalez, wire taps) the admin calls it "political theatre" thus negating anything gained. When in reality, "political theatre" is what led us into Iraq, demonized John Kerry, changed French Fries to Freedom Fries, among other things.

SO in your heart of hearts, I want you, the BF2s community to tell me you really believe the 110th Congress is doing a worse job than the 109th Congress did....if they did accomplish anything.

By the Senates own rules:

Rule 22:
Cloture - The only procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter, and thereby overcome a filibuster. Under the cloture rule (Rule XXII), the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours, but only by vote of three-fifths of the full Senate, normally 60 votes.
It takes 60 votes (a super-majority), not 51 (a majority), to proceed from a motion to a vote.

WASHINGTON — This year Senate Republicans are threatening filibusters to block more legislation than ever before, a pattern that's rooted in — and could increase — the pettiness and dysfunction in Congress.

The trend has been evolving for 30 years. The reasons behind it are too complex to pin on one party. But it has been especially pronounced since the Democrats' razor-thin win in last year's election, giving them effectively a 51-49 Senate majority, and the Republicans' exile to the minority.

Seven months into the current two-year term, the Senate has held 42 "cloture" votes aimed at shutting off extended debate — filibusters, or sometimes only the threat of one — and moving to up-or-down votes on contested legislation. Under Senate rules that protect a minority's right to debate, these votes require a 60-vote supermajority in the 100-member Senate.

Democrats have trouble mustering 60 votes; they've fallen short 22 times so far this year. That's largely why they haven't been able to deliver on their campaign promises.

By sinking a cloture vote this week, Republicans successfully blocked a Democratic bid to withdraw combat troops from Iraq by April, even though a 52-49 Senate majority voted to end debate.

This year Republicans also have blocked votes on immigration legislation, a no-confidence resolution for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and major legislation dealing with energy, labor rights and prescription drugs.

its awfully early to call the 110 seession a failure, i M ean, didnt their term start only 6 months ago?  how fast do people expect things to get done?

believe me, I wont shy away from bashing this session.  but it seemed that they were calling it a failure a few weeks after it started.

109th congress did nothing

110th congress said they would fix all the problems, and as such, they proceeded to do nothing, besides the occasional complaining about whatever and infighting

I would be most surprised if the 111th congress, or 112th congress would ever do anything more than complain and bicker amongst themselves

and as such, it makes no difference whatsoever, which is why this means nothing to me, because thats pretty much all congress ever does, which is what i expect it to do

I think one of the "okay" things the 110th is doing is holding people's feet to the fire.  Things like Gonzalez would've been forgotten after a week in the 109th.  But because the 110 is Democrat, they're doing more to expose corrupt Republicans (not that all Repubs are corrupt, mostly Bush and his goons).  They've certainly got moral motivations, but make no mistake, most of them wouldn't be making even half the fuss if it were a democrat being called on to testify.
