I entered a photography competition with an AMAZING photo, even if I do say so myself, and there's a good chance I might win. The prize is 1000 Pounds.

So, I'm asking YOU, the Tech Team, to build me a computer for 1000 British Pounds.

-RULES-

All prices should be in pounds. Easier to calculate stuff.
Any over-seas stuff should have a trusted delivery.
You can quote complete packages if you wish.

Have fun?

^.^

EDIT: Oooh, I'm also looking for something that'll run DX10 and Vista.
I'm gunna put in a few more details.

Doesn't HAVE to have keyboard/mouse or speakers, but if you find me really good ones for really cheap I might get them
I would like lights in my computer
Has to be able to run BF2 on full graphics no problem.
Dual core processor preferable.
Need an LCD screen.
Needs 3-4Gb of ram. My step-brother has 4Gb and never has any problems.

That's all that I can think of just now..

Thanks all

Yes, I know, but I'm in a shortlist from over 100,000 people in the whole of the UK down to 20 So I'm pretty confident.

Still, make me a pc, even if I'll only be dreaming about it!!!

It's funny how easily these items are overlooked.

That photo is pretty good although i'm not sure if you intended this or not but the picture is slightly tilted towards the left?

Yeah, it's to emphasize the clouds.

I have these for my uber 1337 gaming.
Keyboard

Mouse

So, I really don't mind if you want to include keyboard/mouse. I have amazing speakers, too. 10 years old, but 140 watts! Desperately need an LCD monitor, HD isn't needed though.

Okay, here is what I have drawn up for you. I recommend that you RAID 0 the two hard drives! I'm afraid that I did go a little over the budget, but with 4GB of RAM and a monitor that was pretty hard to keep balanced. This was the best I could do:

Edit: Vista is not on the system. Home Premium costs around £60 so just go for that!

Here's my list for you. No monitor, and no operating system just us your old xp or vista CD (if you have any ). PSU is abit overkill so you cn change it to a 650-700 Watt PSU. It's quad-core so it shoul keep you going for along time (hopefully).

Holy FUCK. That graphics card has the same processing power as my current processor. And more memory than my computer! I'm sitting here with a 1.8ghz processor and 512mb

Sounds like a good package! I'll confer with my geek step-brotherr John... mwhuaha..
God I hope I win.

...What does RAID 0 mean?
I get a constant message on start-up "New hardware detected - RAID - click next to install.."

I think teh uber 1337 John has a vista disc. And he promised me it when I got a decent computer. Do you guys recommend Vista? I'm getting it for free, mind.

I don't think I need a 43 quid sound card.. Bit excessive when I gots one from Currys for a fiver and it sounds just as good, but with only one in and out port, oh and the mic sometimes is a bit dodgey

What's so good about the case? For 60 quid I'd expect a bit

I'm looking more towards an AMD processor, apparently better for gaming?

Do that. Looks like a good system - apart from the nasty hard drives. Don't get them. Best bet would be Samsung or Seagate, followed by WD - not Hitachi and certainly not Maxtor.

Rephrase that, anyone not recommend it?

THE best Video cards at the moment, a 320mb GTS can run BF2/2142 with all settings at their highest with 100FPS

It's good then? Is it worth paying more for the GTX? My step-brother has that (I think) and he says it's like 10 years future proof.

RAID 0 basically connects the drives together (not physically of course) into 1 drive. So those 2 x 250GB would turn into a fast, single 500GB drive. Vista is great, you should get it! Also, don't scrap out on the sound card - you'd be surprised how much of a difference you can get. There are a lot of people here who have the A900 so I suggest you ask one of them It looks great, too. Finally, AMD used to be great for gaming (X2 chips etc) but with Core 2 Duo out - AMD are smoked.

Edit: I can upgrade other components if you drop to 2GB of RAM! (-£80)

RAID is Redundant Array of Independent Drives - basically its a way of using multiple hard drives for redundancy (backup in case one fails).

There are many different types (levels) of RAID, for different situations, though RAID 0, 1 and 5 are the most common.

Technically speaking RAID 0 isnt RAID, as it offers no redundancy (if one drive fails, the whole RAID array also fails) - in that sense its just AID!

RAID 0 (Stripping) is where all your data is broken down into little chunks. These chunks are then saved "randomly" across the two drives, in the location thats fastest to do. RAID 0 offers really fast write times because of this and is recommended if you want really good harddrive performance. However, say you have 2 x 250GB drives in RAID 0, that would appear as 1 x 500GB drive - but if one of the 250GB drives were to fail, you would loose all your data - so backup is important.

As an example, RAID 1 (Mirroring) on the otherhand is where each "chunk" is saved to both drives - so if one drive fails the other one can take over.

Read more here.

BTW if you hear of, and get confused about, hardware / software RAID, just know that you'd probably using software RAID (where the Operating System handles the RAID - as this is cheaper), compared to better performance hardware RAID, that uses a physical RAID card (which is expensive and mainly used in servers).

phew - that was RAID 101.
