So, I recently bought a C2D E6600 with my new rig and after hearing a lot of people talk about how easy it is to overclock on this line of processors, I thought I might tweak mine up a bit.  My question is this:  if I wanted to take the CPU from 2.4 to about 2.8 GHz, would I need to invest in an after-market CPU cooling fan?  As of now, my CPU cores both idle around 40 C (and it should a few degrees lower soon as I messed up wiring the power supply on my P180 and am about to fix it) and I dont know how much OC'ing the processor from 2.4 to 2.8 GHz would effect the temperature.  I don't want to go crazy and OC it a lot since I'm relatively new to this, but I wouldn't mind a little extra performance.

Thanks for any advice!

2.4 to 2.8 should see approx. 8C increase - so as long as your processor is under 40C or so at the minute, you will be fine on stock!

i would say for a .4 ghz increase you might should look into a better CPU cooler or get a better airflow going in your case.  i just built a new system with a AMD Athlon dual core 6000+ 3.0ghz. It idles around 25 with all stock fans that came with the case (Antec 900) and stock CPU cooler, but i just ordered some better coolers and 106cfm fans. until those get here Wednesday i am not going to overclock it yet (just to be a bit safer).  But I have always been with AMD and dont know that much about OC'ing Intel.  40 seams a little high to me to be overclocking that amont.  i myself would recommend yout getting that down a fair amount via more fans, better  fans, or better airflow. If you do ever get new fans be sure to check to the CFM[cubic feet per minute(airflow)]. get one that is AT LEAST 60cfm or higher, my preference is 80+

For an aftermarket one you should look at the thermalright ultra 120 or get a tuniq tower 120.

Getting an aftermarket cooler is always a good idea, even if the stock cooler can handle it, you prolong the life of your CPU with better cooling. As Cyborg says, the Tuniq Tower 120 or Thermalright Ultra 120 would be your best choices.
