So recently we bought a new house.  It came complete with a decorative pond that I thought I was going to tear out until my kids discovered it contained 3 gold fish.

So last night I put the hose in the pond to fill it back up, it has be around 90-93 for the last week so the water is evaporating pretty quick.  I forgot to turn the water back off and it ran all night.  My wife called me at work this morning to tell me the fish drowned, too much clorine in the tap water probably.  So now I am on a spec ops mission to replace the gold fish before my 2 and 4 year olds discover they went belly up.

Anybody else have any amazing immortal pet stories from either the kid or parent angle?

By the way, I do not look forward to the next water bill.

Edit - Just got a call from my wife, turns out we had 5 fish and didn't know it, two small silver looking fish came floating to the top.  We had never seen them.  Oh well, guess I still only need to replace 3.

Once my mate left his goldfish out of water for like 30mins, It survived. It died a week later, after moving to his brothers room

I havn't been home yet, but apparently I flooded the front yard.  It only ran for 12 hours.

when i was a kid i was asked to look after my next door neighbors rabbits (like just feed them) and well to be honest i forgot, so they starved and died.

Luckily they where just normal brown rabbits and i went to the pet store and got 2 for £15.

they never noticed.

I am, but I need to get them in the pond before the kids find out.  My wife is running interference all day but they ususally have daddy radar when I come home, the seem to always be waiting by the window when I pull in.  I will probably have to park aroudn the corner so I can get the fish in the pond before the realize I am home.

probably removed all the oxygen in the pond so the fish suffocated ( you need lots of oxygenating plants in a large pond else they just die). ironically i had about 80 small Coy carp and goldfish some ghost fish (which we never saw after we released them into the pond as they're so damn well camouflaged, stupid mistake to buy them) and a sturgeon which we've had for about 7 years, a heron ate or ripped to shreds and left the bodies littered about 50 goldfish at least in a couple of weeks sturgeons probably alive but the ponds huge and about 1-1 1/2 metres deep and about 1 1/2 metres across so we've never seen it yet as it lives in the bottom or it died.

Not if the hose was running all night. That would provide plenty of oxygen in the water. He probably got it right the first time, they died from chlorine poisoning.

i used to go fishing at my grandparents house in tennesee when i was younger *and they were alive*

i remember once i caught this cool fish and had it in my little bucket *i think i was 7*, i named him, fed him for a bit and everything.

then grandpa took the fish and gutted it right in front of me...haha.  i forgot about it by nightfall and apparently he tasted good.

goldfishes are really hard to raise because you have to watch the temperature of the water and the pH levels plus you can't just put fish in water right away.....you have to get a water conditioner to clean the water from chlorine..

I was thinking about experimenting with this round of fish.  Thanks for the warning about what not to buy.

You should just tell the kids you took the fish to the vet to get ....um....their shots? I dont know, and neither will they.  Lying to the kids ftw!
