They're about 2 years old, Pentium 4, 512mb ram, and nothing has been removed from them.

Everything works fine, except for the fact that they were RAPED by viruses, but that just needs a re-formating job...

So, What can I do with these PC's?

I was kinda insipired buy the scavenger thread, so something useful would be nice

I have my old P3 running as a dedicated torrent/rapidshare box /w vista and operating it via remote desktop connection. I use an old P4 northwood box as a media center. If I can get my hands on another nice PC, I'll set it up as a hardware firewall.

can set up synergy so that your gaming pc mouse and keyboard will control that box as well. works fairly well if you want to switch channels while gaming or doing some work on your other pc.

I have one exactly like you are talking about. Except mine's 7 years old and was raped by viruses and spyware.

I re-formatted it, rehabed it, optimized it so it'll run nice, then have it as a backup system. No gaming possible, but it does wonders as a back-up system when the main is down and/or in use.

Or if you have kids, it can serve as a starter system for them.

But I also like the look of marlboroman's idea for a media center.

think of it as having dual monitors, basically you can set up however you want but essentially you move the mouse to edge of the screen and it moves to the other monitor. i have it set up so that i have to double tap the edge of the screen in order to switch so that you don't get any accidental switching.

Whack all the RAM, HDD's and all the best parts into one box, then turn it into a firewall/server, running a lightweight Linux distro. I'd recommend something like Xubuntu. http://xubuntu.com/

EDIT: Just remembered an old Bit-Tech article on doing a similar thing. They chose Xubuntu too.

You could install BF2 on one of the spares and join the same server with both your good computer and the spare. Put yourself on one team and the other computer on the other team and just use the other computer's map to find out where enemies are.

I will be a student from the 15th of august in Tromsø. I really need a laptop but can't afford buying one :S
