Hi guys,

just got a 500gb SATA drive, and have it recognised by windows.  I want to give it 2 partitions, one 30gb and one the rest.  For some reason Partition Magic can see the drive, but doesn't think its NTFS.  I've aleady formatted the drive in Windows and i'm not sure what to do now.  I've never used PartitionMagic before.

Here's what i see in PartitionMagic

Suggestions?

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks in advance

A dynamic disk is one step up from NTFS (kinda)

Basically you have Basic Disk (partitions) which consist of the old formats (FAT, FAT32, NTFS), and you have Dynamic Disk (volumes), which is an addition to NTFS. Only NTFS can be Dynamic.

The good news is as the name suggests, you can resize it (Windows only allows expansion, into Unallocated space).

However, as I haven't used PM since before it was bought by Norton, you'll have to get insight from elsewhere.

Theoretically, you should be able to click the 'Resize a Partition' button over thar...

Edit: Punctuation.

Thanks for the reply,

I've managed to convert back to Basic Disk, and PartitionMagic will now allow me to create a partition on it.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Cheers!

Yeah, convert it basic to a normal NTFS drive and partition from there.

Does PM come with boot CDs? I find with Acronis that you get less problems if you boot using their CDs and partition from there (outside of Windows, with less stuff interfering).

30GB? Why have a partition that small?

I'm not sure if PM comes with boot cd's, this one isn't mine.

The 30GB partition is soley for windows.  I like to have the operating system  on its own little partition so if all hell breaks loose I can format and re-install windows with minimal fucking around, and without having to worry about data.

Converting to Basic Disk was just a matter of right clicking on the disk in the "Disk Management" area, and choosing "Convert to Basic".  After that, everything is now good.

Thanks.
