I would just get a good security system. But I would get a gun as last resort and would only use it if the dude has some sort of weapon. But maybe just keep a bat around maybe even a pipe?
It won't matter, Some people are relentless and could just run right in or just continue doing what they had planned if they have 1 or more persons with them to steal or get what they came for.Magpie wrote:

Check out your windows cause there is nothing more amusing then somebody who has a ubersecurity house and who has used locks that even an complete idiot could open with a pocketknife.
CCTV system tag your Windows and door out with stickers informing about their presence (to scare away potential thieves)
a firearm should always be the last resort, think preventative.
Good luck mate
I would recommend a Remington.

i would go for a good security system first that alarms the police first but also can scare small noobs away, but for the big guys that can come a firearm could be nice but still wouldent the police come soon after with your security system?
And if you want a firearm dont take something to big, becuase when you go around in your house the doorway and places to small to pull out a shotgun could be to small but with a gun you have tons of space with it and it doesnt shot to kill if you dont it the heart or the head xD

How big is your house? Wouldn't a shotgun be hard to maneuver around a house?

knife/pistol/shock paddles
all you need
all you need
If you don't have much experience I would say go with the shotgun. I would go with the remington 870 (although a saiga 12 would be a VERY nice home defense gun). The great thing about the saiga is that it is semi auto. I keep a Ithaca model 51 loaded and ready to rock as my main home defense gun. I also keep my glock model 23 as my back up. I also keep my 870 loaded and ready to go with slugs in case I need something with a lot of penetrating power. I think the most important consideration in choosing a home defense weapon is ammo. I have neighbors in close proximity so I choose a lighter round for my shotgun. I keep it loaded with #7 1/2 shot (usually sold for birds, clay pigeons etc.) It holds a nice tight pattern and be very devastating, but won't penetrate walls. Also, if you are using a rifle or handgun make sure you are not using rounds that are fully jacketed (full metal jacket) they tend to penetrate a lot. You should stick with rounds that will more likely stay in a persons body, or the wall something that will mushroom and fragment.
The guy said LESS THAN 500 BUCKS.
for that, don't get anything silly, maybe a fake camera and a motion-sensor light, but DO get a taser (if you can find a cheap one) or a .22. Why? You don't necessarily want to be killing an intruder, and you may not have to shoot at all. All of the time, the guy with the gun has the power. SO if he/they see you with a gun, they have 3 options:
1. Run like hell (you win)
2. negotiate/surrender (you win)
3. Attack (you shoot and win)
And, you get the added bonus of not having a particularly destructive weapon, so you won't be smashing up your house in the process.
Btw, you have a wicked guitar collection. props 4 that ;-)

I have a CCW permit and carry a Glock 32 (357 Sig) but I changed the barrel to a match grade 40 cal barrel. They are interchangable on the Glock 32 and it's fairly easy to concel on me.

If you get a shotgun go for a Pump action model.
If anyone so much as hears that chu-chung of a round being chambered they'll run for the hills.
Well remember your life is worth more than anything
DO NOT buy/use any gun with the intention of being "less lethal!" That is utter BS, if you shoot at someone, you are using deadly force, whether it's a .22 or an RPG. The law does not differentiate levels of deadly force. Pump-action shotguns are the recommended home defense weapon. Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 are the most common.
Preventative security is always good too!

Here, pick between these two options
1) You shoot the guy, he gets injured, you call the cops, he goes to the hospital, gets better, then sues you for 'damages' or some bullshit like that (this shit has happened before, I don't know if they've won but it happens). Sometimes, if he's in a gang, the guy tells his gang buddies about your little encounter
-or-
2) You shoot the guy, he has a funeral that nobody attends, the end.

You want to first make your home is secure as it can be, be it with better locks, Alarm, out door lights Etc......
You have to put the thief off from targeting your house, no point having a gun in the house if your home isn't secure or you might end up waking up with said gun you bought to protect yourself pointing in your face.
Think about how to deal with them not getting in, before thinking about what to do once their in.

For 9mm: Browning Highpower.
For 45 ACP: Kimber or Springfield make 1911 models. Also, Springfield makes a polymer gun: XD .45 ACP for $500. You get gun, two clips, case, holster and clip holster. I have not personally shot one but they are comfortable to hold.
I would also get a concealed/carry permit. Most run you about $100 and are good for four years (may vary from state to state though).
Check gunbroker.com website for a huge listing. It's like the ebay for guns. Enjoy.
