The sound in music and in games goes loud then quiet randomly, every few seconds...

Take out the sound card, and use the onboard sound too see if it changes...maybe.

I see you got it worked out. Vista and X-fi can be troublesome. I know of more than a couple people who have experienced this issue. I took mine out and a replaced it with a lesser card. Reinstalling divers (which you did) and moving slots can sometimes solve the problem. It eventually came back for me though. TBO I was never blown away by x-fi. Rumour has it that we will be getting a Vista service pack in November to address more compatibility issues. Hopefully we will get a look at server 2008 around then also.
