I was just wondering what a good laptop is for mainly schoolwork, gaming, multi-media.

Budget? Screen size preference? Will you be keeping it plugged in for most of the time or will you be moving around constantly?

At any rate, look into the following brands: Dell, HP, Asus, Zepto, Compal/Sager.

I don't have one to suggest but I will tell you not to get the Toshiba P105-S9337.  It is a very nice laptop but there is some problem with the Go7900gs graphics cards and windows vista.  There is a bad stuttering problem when you run 3D applications such as games and movies.  The fps will go from around 80fps to about 15fps then back up to 80fps causing a stuttering in the graphics.  This is not only a problem with the Toshiba that I got but some Dells and HP have the same problem.  Here is a link to NVidias forums for more info Link

Conversion of 1700 Euros is around 2300 USD. I don't know how the prices will turn out for you in the Netherlands, but I'm going to hope they are similar.

1. Asus G1S - (If you're alright with a flashy exterior) Very popular notebook by Asus. 15.4", T7500 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 8600m GT. All for around 1800-1900 USD. Some user reviews do say it is somewhat heavy for a 15.4", but it is still portable.

2. Asus V1S - Basically the G1S in a business suit. It has a very clean exterior appearance (no flashy lights), almost the same exact specs as the G1S, but will cost a little extra. For that little extra, you get better build quality, spill-proof keyboard, and a bunch of other accessories.

3. Dell Inspiron/Vostro 1520/1500 - Dell laptops aren't that bad. There have been shipping delays for a while, but many of the people that got them seemed pretty pleased. Vostro comes out cheaper, but only comes in solid black. It's also a business model, but looks almost the same as the Inspiron. I think it has up to T7500/7700 2.2Ghz/2.4Ghz, and up to the 8600m GT. Dell laptops are not the best looking laptops, but they do have great value. Should be well within your budget.

4. HP dv6500t - The Santa Rosa refresh of the dv6000t. Pretty cheap, good value. Unfortunately, I think it has an 8400m GS which is a slightly below average card IMO. It will play older and some new games, but might have to lower a few settings. However, HP notebooks are still pretty nice.

5. Sony Vaio FZ - Looks very nice, and to many peoples' surprise, somewhat decent value. (Sony is somewhat notorious for very nice looking laptops with ridiculous pricing) Only has an option for an 8400m GT or X3100 (Integrated, nono for gaming). 8400m GT is an almost an underclocked 8600m GS, so it's not that bad.

6. Lenovo T61 - Thinkpad series, it's not very good looking, but it's very reliable/durable. There is a model of the T61 that has a dedicated video card, a Nvidia Quadro. It's the equivalent of an 8600m GT so you aren't going to be sacrificing too much gaming performance.

7. Rock Direct/Zepto - I don't know many of their models (they're based mostly in Europe) but I've heard some very decent things. I know that Zepto has one model that's 15.4"/14" with an 8600m GT. But for the Zepto model, if their RAM advertises 800mhz RAM, don't get it. It's a waste of money seeing as the Santa Rosa platform still is not compatible with 800Mhz RAM. Get the cheaper 667Mhz.

Btw  if you don't mind a 14" laptop (best screen size for performance/portability balance IMO) check out the Asus F8Sv (?) or the Asus V2S. The latter is one that I'm pretty interested in.

Edit: Yeah, the Dell will do fine.
