It seems Laboris going to win the election at this stage but its too early to call

and it also looks like John Howard is going to lose his seat

Channel 9 says Kevin Rudd (Labor) is the new PM

but apparently its not over yet

Nappy, you beat me to it!

Yeah, same as always, the NT seats don't change much. Oh well, interest rates will rise, education system will change etc.

Thing is, unless the factions in Labor give Rudd shit we are in for another 3-12 years of Howard. Only it will be Howard ver. 1.1 + Chinese Language pack.

Anybody else watching the Chaser's supposed shenanigans involving the live audience on ABC? 'Labor rent a crowd'...

If I could've voted... straight Greens, like the rest of my family

They need a senate seat here, and the preferences don't hurt.

But yes. Solid Labor victory.

Kevin Rudd is the new Prime Minister of Australia.

I was watching that Rudd guy speaking Chinese once, he was pretty good at it. I dunno why but my respect for that guy increased alot when I heard him speaking a non-English language. It's not everyday you get English speaking Politicians learning other languages so well.

Looks like you guys are gonna get stronger relations with China. Why not eh, it'll do the country good. The world needs to break off from sucking US cock.

What is your Labour party? Left? Right? Anyone seems better than that Elve working for the CIA you had in there.

Looks like you guys are getting out of Iraq, lucky bastards.

[paranoia]

Rudd's making his speech as I write this. All pretty empty words, much like Howard's farewell. He is very smug about all this isn't he.

Set aside old battles? No shit Sherlock Holmes. He's leader of a party that holds a majority in every Parliament in Australia. Unions control the laws, so it's a good thing my father is selling his business.

I've got a bad feeling about this. I don't know why, but I just do. Might have to do with a massive lack of sleep these past 48 hours. GOT IT. His eyes don't reflect what he's saying. THIS IS ALL A BIG CONSPIRACY BY THE UNIONS TO TURN AUSTRALIA INTO A NEW SOVIET UNION! [/paranoia]

No but seriously, not voting Labor next time, I already have bad feelings about this guy. His wife is gross too.

Yay Johnny got the arse and Kev got voted in

With luck Kev will remove all Aussie troops from that cluster-fuck abortion called Iraq and bring them home. South Pacific nations have no business being in the Middle East.

It's called moderation. Shit happens, if you are any good at academic work it shouldn't affect you.

So Rudd is the new Howard ...

... but now Labor is in we're all f$cked?

Can't be both ...

Rudd will be like Blair in the UK, lot more style than substance. As long as the minor parties hold the balance of power in the Senate, that will limit Labor's ability to go nuts. I don't think Rudd will rock the boat as much as people think.

You lot aren't old enough (it seems) to remember when Hawke and Keating were in. They did a lot of good reforms, which you would have expected from the Coalition not the ALP. Yeah there were high interest rates, but it was the same elsewhere in the world. When its the ALP in power it's their fault but when Howard it's not ...?

Howard spent 11 years do very little. HIs biggest reforms were the GST and immigration. Not what I'd want my legacy to be.

Rudd should hopefully fix up the education and health system, the first which Howard gutted and the 2nd which the states have ignored.

There is a reason we are running short on doctors, engineers, etc. The education system got run intop the ground under Labor and then the Coalition. We keep it up and in 20 years time we will be the white trash of Asia, with all the doctors and accountants coming from the well educated masses of India, China and Malaysia. Tops ....

Rudd did make a point of being different in the last week or so of the campaign.

TBH I think the one guy who got the short end of the stick was Gary Nairn. Put his heart and soul into the electorate of Eden-Monaro for a decade (so that literally NO-ONE dislikes him) and then gets carted off by an outsider essentially.

pj, the only thing Howard did to education was gut the Universities by cutting their funding. Howard was going to bring in a national education system by the way.

And yes, Rudd is the 'new Howard' but... ALP is factionalised and if he can't keep control of the various unions then we probably will find our economy in the shitter.

On the topic of interest rates, the world is headed for a recession and the USA is just beginning to slide into one. Not much Howard could do about that. Wasn't around during Hawke/Keating years for the most part.

Howard also did away with the VSU for university's and tried to kill the labor dominance, I'd guess you'd call it, of students who are more likely to vote Greens and Labor. Why vote for big business Liberals?

I'm really happy with the result, and if Labor win the next election with a similar swing again the Liberals will be all but gone. One can hope.

Howard was pleased to keep wages at record lows, you know, the average income Australians earn.

The confusion arises because people, such as myself, have been reading all about the LABOUR party of England for a while now.

So for the Australian LABOR party to get back in the news... Yeah. Confusing shit.

What I mean is muscle memory. When refering to political parties I am used to typing labor labour.
