I think you're right with the "time for Islam to mature as a religion". I mean the Christian church was exactly the same a thousand years ago, but is not as bad as this now.

USM has a very valid point, we seem to get protests which are heavily 'over-the-top' for something little and insignificant in which nobody has been hurt, the Dutch cartoons and this, in which they actually promote killings (in this case the execution of Ms. Gibbons). I guess we just have to be careful to realize that the average Muslim isn't a crazy idiot. Now, I can't say that I approve of the way many Middle Eastern countries treat women, but that's another discussion altogether.
EDIT: I'm not sure how they are in Australia, but I'd assume they are friendly to the West, if they're willing to travel all the way over to your country.
