I looked for similar topic but couldnt find one.

So i was just wondering, now that i got BF2 to work with Vista, why it runs so slow. I know Vista slows things down but what should i do. I had a computer with 1.87 Ghz Duo Core, Nvidia Ge Force 7900, 2 Gigs of Ram and XP and BF2 worked fine, and even now i have Ge Force 8600 with 2.00Ghz, and 2 Gigs of Ram. The only problem is that the new comp has Vista...So if i cant change the settings on vista to run BF2 like it used to, then is there a way to uninstall Vista and install windows xp again? I dont even really like Vista all that much. Thanks,

Indian

Vista has to emulate XP to play BF2, which adds some lag. So long as you save your important files on another harddrive or partition, you could reinstall XP assuming you have the CD.

I'm interested in other people's feedback considering I know next-to-nothing about Vista. In fact, I'm going to be building a whole new computer within the next few weeks and I'm going to run Vista x64. I guess I'll have to stick with XP if BF2 is going to go slow, though

Vista sucks but compared to my old comp bf2 runs a whole hell of a lot better once the comp gets all warmed up to it. fraps and all. make sure ur grfx card is set to performance and try turning all visual enhancements off

I would figure if you were running 64 bit, it would have to emulate. Not sure what emulates 32bit xp vs 32bit vista.

So, it works fine, if a little laggy?

Is this specific to NVidia cards, or 64-bit processors? I'm running ATI on a dual-core 32-bit system, anyone got experience with that?

Yes, I have the same problems.  BF2 runs OK on Vista, but you have to do some tuning.  I have two sets of RAID disks; one for the OS and one for the pagefile and BF2 binaries.  I have also set the pagefile to be a specific size (rather than to a system managed size).

Make sure that you manually upgrade punkbuster as it changes to using services and a kernal driver.  This was changed so that it will work better in Vista security architecture.  However I get a 10 second hangup after I first join a server (about a minute into the round) and I think that this may be caused by the punkbuster kernal driver.  The hangup seems to effect the system at a low level (when you do perfmon logging, it drops samples suring the hangup).

With the latest version of punkbuster, you no longer need to run BF2 as an admin.

I turned off dual view (monitor + TV output) and that seemed to fix some issues with BF2 being minimised when I join a new game.

Plus you also have to the usual clear of the cache and a propper defrag.  I found that diskeeper did a better job of defraging (so that you would notice) than teh builtin defrag tool with Vista.

But even so you will never get it to run as good as in Vista.  I have mine to a tolerabe state now.

On the up side I find that the game loads a bit quicker under Vista.

Also don't forget to stop the automatic backups.  Vista is not smart enough to suspend backups while you are in the middle of a war.

I'm about to format machine - I'm so tired of Vista. I can't get my printer, my camera, my video camera and finally my new phone working. Lack of drivers. It sucsk so badly. And BF2 ran better on my old XP machine with a single 3ghz machine. Now I got a quad core processor and all, but still BF2 ran better on my old machine. I have more lagging now and I really should not have! (4 mbit network and a 8800GTS graphics card)
So now I format my new one and install XP on it. Then I'm back in business!

I find it runs much smoother on Vista, apart from the standard host of issues with punkbuster, and it STILL demanding a restart.

I think the game's just lazily coded and inneficient.

Yeah, im thinking of reinstalling XP on my new computer, i didn't spend $4500 on a PC for vista to fuck it all up. Like, music and sound comes threw only my center and sub, not the other 4 speakers, funny thing is, the only time it will actually use the other speakers, is when playing modern games, like Bioshock, and CoD4... And there was no vista drivers that came with my elite pro sound card, i think it was only meant for Xp, or thats what the box says anyways... I had to go download some, even then, i was missing out on A LOT of the features i payed good money for. Like, for one, surround sound for EVERYTHING, all those Creative programs, and so much more, its actually quite depressing...

$4500 for a PC??? Somehow I get the feeling that you might've been ripped off, no matter how uber-leet it is

yea because DICE and EA are supposed to know 2 years after their game is released people will be playing on Vista?

$4500 including sound system, plus i have 2 22' monitors, it would have actually costed quite a bit more anywhere else, plus im a Canadian, we pay FKN 33 to 45% more than Americans do for everything, even shit that we FKN make!!! And with our dollar so close, thats just disturbing. Plus, i went to the US, to buy a Can-Am ATV, or better known as Bombardier, or BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) And they wouldn't sell to me because i was Canadian, and that pisses me off, because they're a Canadian manufactured company, very very disturbing i think...

Game hasn't ever worked that well. It's no surprise that BF2 doesn't run well on Vista considering it never worked on XP that well either.

I had a crappy PC with XP and it took me about 10 minutes to load a map on BF2...  So I said to myself that buying a new PC would be a smart move. There I go for DUO CORE 3 Ghz + 2 Gb of ram + 8800 GTS + VISTA . They told me it was very stable and smooth in that shop...
Anyway, now I load lightning quick compared to what I was used too, but instead of being kicked because I'm one of those idle players, I'm sent back to desktop with that error message :

Memory Dll: all alloc attempts failed for size 4119264

What does it mean? Can I do something about it or do I have wait until a far more greater EA/DICE issue makes that problem totally acceptable?

My uncle has Vista and he says that the software program runs better with another hard-drive mirrored.  W/E the phuck that means, but I figured maybe you know more about CMPS than I do.  He suggested Mirroring your operating system with 2 or more hard-drives.  And if it was bad advice it proves I'm an idiot.! LOL anyways thought I'd post.

bf2 runs fine on mine. Maybe 4 gigs of memory helps who knows. I had one ctd but that was it. Oh and a side note I had a ctd with CoD4 so far no major problems.

I get CTD and blue screens so often now that I put Vista on (for Crysis DX10 mp) that my friends say I got Vista'd when I disappear from the server we're in.

I've narrowed down the issues to, having creative XMSS3D and Crystalizer enabled for the X-Fi cards, which is a shame, because with those things turned on, the sound is amazingly better. Also running itunes while playing seems to give Vista grief and cause crashes.

Other than that though BF2 runs smooth the entire time with no issues. Crysis is also stable (amazingly) on my machine, although I had to download a 3rd party no CD crack to launch the x64 mode because EA's .exe doesn't work on my box rofl. I've noticed that Vista actually seems a little bit more stable with my 8800 GTS overclocked which is shockingly the opposite of what I expected.

Runs fine on mine. Vista x64, C2D 2.4Ghz, 8600GT and 4GB ram. I'm the first person to load into a map now, it's erotic.
