Who cares?  It's irrelevant whether atheism's twentieth century 50+ million body count is greater than the cumulative Muslim and Christian slaughter over the centuries.  Dead is dead, no matter what the (anti-)religious motiviation for the killing is.  Whether you're on a crusade to convert, or on a crusade to destroy religions, you're wrong when you start killing people.  As someone said above, the problem isn't religion, it's dogma.

The solution is for everyone to get off their high horses and let everyone else alone.
Now that's an insight we could all do with taking in.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

Because the Jews haven't staged any massacres at all.

To be honest, with every religion, I respect the followers much more than the leaders. It's easy to lead a bunch of people, and to tell them what to do. To actually live by this stuff, is something else.
On the other hand, I respect people who interpret religion for themselves a lot more than followers.

Ouch! Only one of those wars was fought over religion, and it was 500 years ago.

Wow. A former member of Hitler Youth and a Wehrmacht anti-aircraft battery operator holding atheism responsible for 'cruel acts'. Wow.

That's a hit below the belt, don't you think?  I'm almost certain he had no desire to join any of Hitler's institutions, and I'm sure he condemns what Hitler did.  I'm no Pope fan, but it's not right to slander someone.

To GS, the Pope was just Hitler's tool when he was part of the Hitler Youth.  Do you blame the gun that kills somebody or the person who shot it?

Yes, every member of the German armed forces was a card-carrying Nazi.   Apparently all the other AA operators in WW2 were cruel also.  Pffff.

About the Nazis: Most of them were not the Jew-haters that we think of. Many of them were simply patriots... What's wrong with being a patriot? You don't have to agree with the leader's ideals to want to defend your country...

Nazi does not equate to bad. I see Hitler, and the people in the concentration camps as bad.

Atheism has been a hot topic recently thanks to best-selling books questioning the value of religion such as "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "God is Not Great" by Christopher Hitchens.
The most thoughtful atheists--let's call them liberal atheists-- have always understood that the impossibility of negative proof is a crack through which the gods, no matter how ruthlessly banished from the human world, forever threaten to return. These atheists--whose ranks include Socrates, Lucretius, Sextus Empiricus, Montaigne, Albert Camus, and Primo Levi--responded to their lack of certitude, to the invariably provisional character of the beliefs by which they oriented their lives, in a supremely philosophical way: with equanimity.
Accordingly, they did not go out of their way to act as missionaries for unbelief.
Anyone else see the difference between the New and Old Atheist?

Relgion is the biggest killer on the planet, more people die from it than anything else.  So what "GOD" says murder is correct? I have no problem with any religon as i dont care, if i did i may have fight a "Holy" war and kill inocent people to prove so to my god. If there is one most people will go to hell as there actions for "war" "suicide bombs" "hatred" were not the intentions of a god.

My grandfather was in the US Air Force during WW2 and my original point stands.  Whether or not the AA operator was a staunch Nazi wouldn't make my grandfather any more alive or dead if he had been shot down.  Fortunately he was not and I have many good memories with him before his passing 10 years ago.

I don't know about that, Genius. I trust people read my posts as I do for pretty much every single topic I happen upon, but I can never seem to get a point across and have to repeatedly explain stuff. I hold much less hope that people would have had an epiphany from my posts over the course of the past few months.

One thing that seems to be true about anyone's religious beliefs is that they are very hard to change.

Religion is a tool human beings use to carry out their barbaric self destructive tendencies. If it weren't religion causing conflict it would be something else. Science damn it!
