So my best friend is a total geek when it comes to racism and sexism (as in, he's totally against them and it's something that's always on his mind/he talks about everyday) and he made this post here on his blog:

http://d-storm1.shroom.net/joe_sixpack/

now, i read it and i wasn't really sure of what to think of it.  Do they really promote racism? If you read the comments, his uncle responds by saying it's that way b/c the audience is predominantly white, but idk.

Oh god....

It's so illogical to unthink things that are true to be "politically correct"

Obviously there are going to be black men in sports games and white men in sci fi shooters set in a future Russia like country. WHAT ABOUT ALXYS DAD HUH?

Does there need to be an even amount of races everywhere for something to be considered "correct"

Racism is where you find a black man, Call him the n word, and kill him.

It should not be confused with being politically incorrect.

But even his ideas and theory's don't follow those guidelines.

What your friend thinks is that in order to avoid racism you have to put characters that don't fit their context into all games.

There are people promoting racism everyday.

A video game won't do much.

Wheither it's streets or inside your own home or on the computer.

It will be there.

Not too big a deal to me. In my opinion, the people who make the biggest deals about racism and sexism are only promoting it and making it more and more known instead of just forgetting about what someone's race or sex is and move on.

I have many friends of various races, but most of the time I don't even realize what race they are because I don't care and it doesn't matter.

I was kinda offended at your friends ignorance so I almost put his site up for a raid but I don't think that would be appropriate.

tell your friend to make an account to come on this thread and debate his views. If hes not able to do that his side isn't solid.

Racism is getting on my nerves, so what if there is no black person in a game. There are black only music stations, and clubs, do we call them racist?
Its putting down another creed, not making them part of everything just for the sake of it!!!

Heres my question to people bitching about racism and stereotyping and political correctness: If everyone should be treated EXACTLY the same why is it that people of the African American race go out of their way to look and act different than the Caucasian people?

Does acting like a thug promote respect? No it doesn't

And why is it that when people like barack obama "ACT WHITE" they get scolded? Isn't that politically incorrect?

Basically...  people want to be different, but they often still conform to one stereotype or another.

"I'm a nonconformist, just like all my friends."

EXACTLY!

That's what I noticed about the generation i'm in. so many people spend so much fucking effort trying to stand out that only those people exist with the exception of a few.

No matter what, people are going to call racism. Seriously, if there's to many blacks, whites, asians, middle-easterns - any of them, someones going to notice.
And when products, companies, art, etc. pay attention to this fact and make their results more equaled, people are going to whine about how 'this pays to much attention to race.'
Its not them, its us; that's to say the receivers of the product or w/e are the ones being racists.
Seriously, just ignore it. I've stopped noticing stuff like that.

It trails off after college.  Then, everybody tries so hard to be the same and fit in with whatever workplace culture they're in.

That's some good social dialog - the hypocrisy of today's society lies in its 'encouragement' of individualism; people notice how popular this philosophy is and they automatically conform to it and become part of some groups which seem to be different from others.
This kind of encourages the quick recycling of ideas and groups; once either becomes to popular, the people move on to other things and that idea/group deflates as quickly as it grew.
So does that mean we should give up this individualistic attitude, both because it's popular and because , by doing so, it will actually become individualism again? Either way, in its current, popularized form, it seems to be no different than conformity.
I'm not saying individualism doesn't exist today, but .... maybe its that people have a mass misconception on what it truly is, or they feel they MUST be different, so they put to much focus on it.

Or maybe I'm doing the same thing right now?
Don't you hate that? When you get so absorbed into criticizing something that you actually become the thing you're criticizing?
That has a lot to do with the criticism of how society deals with race today as well. The overly-critical I mean, like that asshole mentioned in the OP.

Good post. By your logic the only way to truly be an individual is to use that term by the true definition of it

# being or characteristic of a single thing or person; "individual drops of rain"; "please mark the individual pages"; "they went their individual ...
# separate and distinct from others of the same kind; "mark the individual pages"; "on a case-by-case basis"
# characteristic of or meant for a single person or thing; "an individual serving"; "single occupancy"; "a single bed"

So people should just be who they are and cut the crap with trying to fit in/stand out. because just by exerting an effort on being different you are basically just following all the others who do the same.

and I don't think your being hypocritical at all.

Yep...  It's a really simple concept, but it's so true.  It's about being the person you really are.

Granted, the tricky thing is...  some people really are posers too.

Adding more/random races into games requires a bit of effort in the form of programming/graphic editing.  Fact is, having a single race or in BF2's case a race per class makes for simpler coding.

Not everyone has the intelligence to look past a person's skin color.  The best thing to do about stuff like that is to ignore them and let them wallow in their own idiocy.  Lots of people in this game have used the n word in the game and I just laugh at their ignorance.  Nothing you can do about it but move on.

Tell your best friend that the people of BF2S say 'HA-HA!'

But seriously, wouldn't it also be racist if a game consisted entirely of black or oriental men, or sexist if it were all women? Sheesh, "Gordon Freeman of Half-Life 2 has no in-game model apart from gloved hands. You could make believe him any ethnicity you wanted, if it wasn’t for the big picture of a white man on the front of the box..."

He has way too much time on his hands, despite the fact that he couldn't name more than three games that had non-white player-characters.

#1: Shooters tend to be set in Asian locations, and there aren't may african americans living in Beijing, Moscow, and Damascus, believe it or not.

#2: During WWII, the Army was segregated, and black and white regiments rarely fought side by side.  (I believe the tuskeege airmen did get a game or two)

#3: A lot of games use only one or two character models to represent The marines, so there isn't much space for diversity, simply due to limitations in disk space.

#4: I have no problem playing as a black, Hispanic, Chinese, Arab, or Female character, so why should he have a problem playing a white character?

To be honest, the blatant stereotyping in GTA San Andreas of the American black "gangsta" ghetto style is exactly what deterred me from finishing the game.

About racism: It's called stereotyping, it's done in every game, and it's done because you need some structure to the game, and that's an easy way to bring it in. It's hard to make all-realistic characters, and keep the audience identifying themselves with the game. It's not supposed to be real. It's a game.
It's made to entertain, and it does (otherwise it's given a low rating)
