Dell computer runnning slow!!! help!!!

now i realise my computer isnt great.... but its not terrible.

im running

Dell Dimension DIME521

AMD Athlon (tm) 64x2 Dual
Core Processor 5200+
2.61 Ghz, 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Adress Extension

ATI raideon X1300 Pro 256 MB
360 GB harddrive

so its not great but it is running really slow atm.
i have been told/heard that its because its a Dell and that i need to delete all the Dell programs/support etc.
is this true?? also i am prob buying a 8600 in a couple days anyway.

Try using Disk Cleanup and Defragging it.

im planning on getting GEFORCE 8600GT 1G PCIE DDR2 2DH sorry for not specifying...

@cian. i have done many defrags/cleanups...

will i have problems if i do remove dell software?

also ... i really dont feel like reformating... but if it comes to it i will

Suggestions:

-Adware/Spyware removal program
-Disk defrag
-Disk clean up
-checkdsk
-Stop viewing your current pr0n sources because they are fucking you
-If you use norton, uninstall ASAP and get a decent AV program (they say avast is great, I dunno, I use linux)
-Read the recommendations of the fellow posters in here

If you can spend more, get the 8800GT. The performance difference is HUGE.
They cost around 300$ in the US, I don't know about Australia though.

yer $300 US is about 338.985 AUD lol. ummm yer i dont have the money atm.... so im not looking at the 8800 GT i would love one though... im going to completely built a new computer in a while so ill get the best card thats around at that time.

you need to dedell that bitch, most complete method is a fresh install. hopefully they even gave you your hard copy of windows. I'd do that before replacing anything.

you may wanna make sure your puter is recognizing all your ram.

My dell is great, i "dedelled" it and it has worked fantastic, although its time for a new computer. i dont think an 8800GT would fit in a dell, nor is the price even affordable =x

i was not given a hard copy of XP... but im thinking of getting a pirated vista and see how that goes... becuase my brother has a dell computer thats worse than mine... it hasnt been dedelled and its running really fast but its on vista

Try the following:
Check for driver updates
Defragment your computer
Do Virus and Spyware checks
Delete unused files
Get regedit and clean up your registry
Use hijackthis to clear up your startup programs
don't download porn (stream it - less wait, less viruses )

And if all fails, reformat.

you can also run diagnostics to check if nothing is wrong with the hardware, but yeah get rid of virusses, clean up HD and registry, defragment and you'll have a faster computer. Fresh install is always better (although watch out about the crap that installs with recovery disks).
